So I took the plunge and mailed in my C&R application today. Planned on doing it a couple of weeks ago but sat on it for no good reason.

Now the question I have to answer is what to buy first. Im thinking SKS or a Bulgie Mak. Dont have much use for a bolt action relic since Im a leftie.

How much of a discount would I be getting from say Brownells and places like that after I have the license on file?

Don't know about Brownell's since I've been too lazy to put a copy of my C&R into a stamped envelope and send it in (I'm blaming the internet for making me too lazy to go to the Post Office  ). Since you're lefty, you can get a FN-49 (they are fun, especially in 8mm :D ) and a Swedish Ag42b. Oh, and a SVT 40 too. Lotta nice choices in semi-auto. Can't go wrong with SKS, either ;) . In case you don't already know, it's several weeks before they send you the approval for the C&R, but that just means more time to figure out where to start :D .

Roger that. Figure anywhere round 60 days. And your right, gives me time to compile my list and direct funds to cover such list.

Way to go! You're going to 'save' all kinds of money!

I don't believe that the Bulgarian Maks are on the C&R list. You won't be able to purchase them with your C&R license.

The Yugo SKSs, on the other hand, are a great deal right now. Like new, excellent, and unissued Yugos are out there and are quite reasonable, maybe in the $105 - $110 range.

You could go broke saving money with your C&R license. Good luck, and have fun.

I am not very familiar with the C&R license...what are the benefits to having it for a collector? For example what kind of deal do you get on guns compared to the going rate and is it only on specific guns or all guns?

Thanks,

The Brownells and Midway C&R discounts are about 20%. One or two orders from either of them will more than pay for your license.

Bulgie Maks aren't C&R, but if you have a C&R you can order Maks and other non C&R stuff directly from SOG (and other places that are "wholesale only") instead of having a dealer order it for you (and marking it up). You will still have to have a Bulgie sent to a local FFL though.

Silly me. I stand corrected. Dont know why I was thinking the Mak's were C&R. Still, I plan on gettting one anyway.

East German and Russian Maks are on the list. Polish and Bulgarians are not. Go figure...

"Which Makarovs are considered Curios and Relics?
For those not familiar with the Curio and Relic FFL, visit the Cruffler.com page.

While the list of C&R weapons includes both the East German and Russian Makarovs, the general concensus is that only the original Russian military Makarovs are included among the Russian guns. That is, the commercially produced Baikal IJ-70 with a rear target sight does not qualify under the spirit of the C&R law. While there are some dealers that will sell IJ-70s to C&R licensed individuals, we recommend that you do not engage in such a transaction. The Bureau of ATF has not made a definitive written statement about the IJ-70, but in our opinion, it does not qualify under C&R. The East German guns are clearly C&R eligible.

The Bulgarian (including Miltex), Chinese, and Simson-Suhl are not considered curio & relics. Note that occasionally, dealers will have a batch of Bulgarian Makarovs with a Russian military Makarov tucked in among them. Know your markings. Of course, convincing the dealer that it's a Russian and thus C&R may be an uphill battle."

Hope this helps.

Also, if the item in question was manufactured more than 50 years prior to the current date, it automatically qualifies as a curio/relic, whether it is listed on the C&R list or not. View the attached .pdf.
