Well, I mailed off my C&R application on Friday June 30. The BATFE charged my credit card on July 5th and I received my license today, July 15.

That's right--15 days, from mailing off my application to receiving the license.

Very nice! Just mailed mine last week, would be very nice to come home from vacation and find it in the mailbox. You know, just in case there's any money left over...:D

Took 17 days in NC. I would think VA would take about the same.

See link in my sig for C&R application process. Not hard at all, if you can pass the background check to buy a firearm at a dealer, you should be able to get a C&R with no problem.

You might want to call Monday and see if they even got it. I read a couple posts on surplusrifle.com where peoples apps got lost in the mail. They charge first, before they process, so you should have seen a debit for it by now.

I'm on day #45 since my check was cashed.
I am told that they are supposed to have it back to you in "no less than 60 days".
They are still a government agency, however.

do you need to keep all sorts of records and do a certian number of transactions so they will still consider you in need of it? I hear if you get an FFL and don't do enough they will take it away.

When I turn 21 I have considered getting one, if for nothing else the dealer discounts you can get....and making it easier to get certian guns doesn't hurt either.

And for your first purchases, you shoud get the following:

M44
CZ52
SKS M59/66
Enfield Mk I. 2A (7.62x51 RARE GET IT NOW)
M1895
SVT-41

The only things I have left to buy are the M1895 and the SVT-41. That's pretty much all the C&R weapons I want, (well, I almost bought a "boy's model" .22 for my future nepew at $120, but that's about as far as I'll go. The rest of my weapons aren't 03 FFL elligible.

In answer to some of the questions. It is easy to get a C&R. The form is short and easy to fill out, the paperwork required by the Feds is minimal and there are no requirements for minimum number of purchases. The discounts from vendors can be quite significant. You can also get great deals on C&R firearms of course. Nothing quite like waiting for a historic firearm to show up at your door. I've had mine for a bit over 4 years now and actually seldom use it for firearm purchases anymore. It still proves easily worth the $30 for 3 years of licensure. I think it took about 20 days for mine to arrive the first time.

I had already planned on the CZ52 and the SKS. I thought I'd pick up an Enfield 2A if they're not gone already. In addition to your excellent suggestions, my interests run to Latin American firearms.

he's held a permit for 4 years. You have to renew every 3. So I'm guessing he's had to get it twice *shrug*.

On one of the C&R forums I'm a member of I've heard of it taking as few as 8 days to over a year. It depends on how busy the ATF is at the time of application, I believe. I sent mine in about the same time Shotgun News did an article on applying for the C&R. I think they were pretty covered up with applications, but it still only took me 34 business days.

From what I understand, even though a Federal license, local laws override some of the advantages of the C&R. New York requires an in-person meeting with ATF to get the application approved, some states the weapons (at least handguns) still have to be delivered through an 01FFL. Mostly CA, MD, NY, NJ, Massachusetts and other states that make it difficult to own regular guns also cause difficulty with C&R guns, too.

This is a good C& R forum for questions:

My wishlist so far:

Whitney Wolverine .22 pistol (Olympic makes a modern copy, but I want steel, not polymer)
A few Nagant revolvers
Would like to find a LeMat revolver.
Gotta add to my Nagant rifle collection, of course.
an SKS because you just gotta...

Got my C&R in 3 weeks. Keeping the German Lugers coming! Once you have one, all others pale in comparison.:)

Took over a week to cash my check, another week till they "received my application", and 3 months after that.

Finally got it, but here is some advice: Don't try to apply for one in a blue state.

What is an SVT-41?

IIRC, mine came in about a month after I sent in the form with the check.

I got two sets of all the misc crap they send you about a week after I sent in the forms. The state law books and stuff.

A more important problem is dealing with a certain person who wants to restrict the number of firearms showing up that she has to sign for. I am willing to adopt a one gun a month policy. :)

Just checked and found the charge to my card posted on the 13th - and I mailed it on the 10th! I didn't even expect the USPS to get the envelope there that quickly.

Based on the reports of others, I was expecting the information packet to take up to a couple of weeks after getting the license, but it arrived today. The BATFE is really on a roll!

Some get the info packets long before the actual license. That would probably indicate you have been approved, though.

A word of caution: The license comes in a light blue envelope that looks like so much junk mail if you don't pay attention. Mine came in a stack that I threw on the table and was going to go through later. My wife happened to notice the the ATF logo on it when she was sitting at the table reading.
