Top shot show on History

Whether the show is factual in terms of history or firearms doesn't bother me. I think it is great. Do you know how much my wife has on reality shows that are horrible such as Big Brother, Real World, Bachelor, etc? We don't have a basement and I don't like watching tv in my bedroom so I am basically stuck in the same room while those shows are playing. While usually I am not a fan of reality shows, Top Shot along with The Ultimate Fighter are imo a breath of fresh air.

And yet, you didn't. How tremendously unfortunate that you've lost out on the opportunity to introduce some presumably phenomenal shooters to the rest of the world.

The internets, producing experts on every subject since the 1990's.

It is a TV show. Let me say that again, A TV SHOW.

It is about appealing to the masses, not a bunch of "I could have done betters" on the internet. Don't like the people they picked to be on the show? Then by all means start your own TV show, pick all the uninteresting people you want. I am sure you will get like 5 people to watch it. Or just don't watch it.

I watch the show because it is mildly entertaining and every now and then there is some pretty dang good shooting. I would even go so far as to say that most of the people on the show, including last season, could out shoot just about everybody on this board. Myself included.

The Internet, serious business.

Gus, I think the best shot of the whole show as during the selection phase to nominate the two competitors to battle it out for elimination...

I dont remember who it was, but the guy shot dead on... perfect shot, right in the center of the dot. One of the women said "Nice Shot" as he returned. I agree.

Don't worry Sir. I am from the Internet.

I noticed that not all people on show are competitive/champion "shooters".

The asian guy for example. He hit the bullseye on the very first event. He also hit at least one of the billiard balls. He is listed as a Golf Instructor I believe BUT he said that he is good at any sport he tries.

Jay is competitive in archery and ten-meter air pistol.

There's a short bio of each of the contestants at the official website:

http://www.history.com/shows/top-shot/bios

For the competitors who actually have backgrounds competing in various games, you can usually go to the websites for the governing bodies of those games and look up where they have placed at various matches.

Well I enjoyed watching it. As many others have said.. it is a TV show. Better a positive show about shooting than another "Housewives of (insert place I would never want to go here)"

Everybody has a bad day but I look at it like this. ITS a TV show and I expected as much but if we get past all of the negatives and try to learn from what we are seeing maybe each of us may take something away from it that may help us.

First thing I look at is that they seem to have a large % of pistol events. some will envolve moving but basicly learning to run around like a monkey on speed will not teach you how to hit a target in which YOU are stationary. That goes for Rifle shooting also I would think.

I take from it what ever shooting sport I should try just maybe I should learn to be able to hit that target in what ever shooting sport I do acurately before I learn the rest of the sport or at least include it into my practice routine.

Now I am not knocking any sport but even last year showed this trait as I was really taken aback knowing some folks would do great in a cetain aspect of the competition but struck out. How the heck does that happen?

I think the paint ball thing looks cool and putting all of the other type of things in it may help even the field out a little. After all its a overall top shot and we can not expect it to only cover certain shooting aspects to a advantage of certain shooters.

Also the big second thing I took from it was to be humble in what ever we do. By saying nice shot and congratulating someone on doing well or beating you goes a long ways to acheiving goals not only in the shooting sports but in everyday life.

I have seen folks knock others and make fun of them and I just think why would someone come back and do this again if they are going to be surrounded by jerks.

Think of the old saying walk softly and carry a big stick comes to mind.

Someone pointed out to me the other day when someone said come on out and put your money where your mouth is or something like that when someone was just trying to learn where to go learn how to try a certain shooting sport.
You really think I would want to partake in any event with a jerk like that. Or another funny one is oh I tried that sport and found it to easy and thats why I do this sport as its harder. Well guess what they most likely sucked at the other sport but are to little of a person to say something nice but instead chose to show their small thinking ways.

Or say something like hey I have a friend who was offered to shoot for the US in the olympics but turned it down. SAY WHAT? Someone turned down a chance to represent the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? I would jump at the chance if I was that good. Was always curious when someone made that statement and myself knowing quite a few folks who do try out and do it and some who try it out and do not make it.
Which events did they try out for? are they in the developement program and what were their scores in the qualifiers? As we all know you need to be able to at least compete at a certain level against your peers. If they were that good which olympic qualifing slots did they win for the UNITED STATES or someone who did win a slot for the US do it just for them? We all know we do not get folks into the olympics by just wishing it.
I always look into what comes out of someones mouth and their actions and hey its just a tv show not the olympics

I like it.

Gives me hope for the show I want to pitch to History: Its kind of like Shooting Gallery or Impossible Shots, but hosted by Jerremy Clarkson and ... a shooter I haven't thought of yet. Maybe Larry?...

Chris "the Kayak-Man" Johnson

I finally got to see it Friday night. That shooting in the fog/rain thing was pretty cool, even in its edited down version.

This looks like it's going to be a fun season of odd and challenging stages. I'm looking forward to it.

I suspect the biggest problem is that they're shooting firearms that they don't own.

They never discuss where a rifle is sighted in. Even beyond that, who would really want to shoot for accuracy with a rifle you've fired a couple times and ammo that you didn't load?

Thank you history channel! That show is totally different! More shooting and better shooters.

I can’t believe they got Gunny Zinns on the show. He is a God.

I am deployed right now and had to talk to my AF buddy about their snipers.. they went through a Close Precision Engagement Course (CPEC)

Its a course that is a couple of weeks long that they learn how to shoot guns.... its the only sharpshooter course that trains woman i guess. There claim to fame is one of their girls shot a bg at 700 yards.

They did not go through an actual Marine/Army/NSWG sniper school.

I think it's good for the sport and good for the cause. It sheds light on the sporting and fun aspects of shooting, to the previouslly uninformed. My personal opinion isn't important, it isn't easy to put something like that together, trying to make it mainstream while still keeping it real to more than the average shooter. It's like "Survivor with guns". Since Colby was in Survivor, he reminds me more and more of Jeff Probst, every week.

I like the show. I only wish they would show more of the shooting. Of course, not everybody who watches the show is as interested in the actually shooting as us shooters are. I don't mind the elimination procedure. It is not like they just vote for who they won't gone. You still have a chance to win a head to head. If you don't, then at least the better shooter won. This is about rounded skills, not specialty skills.

The one elimination last year I didn't like, was where the essentially had head to head competition, each shooter going separately, and the other shooters could watch. They didn't let them do that before. Not only that, but TWO shooters were eliminated. It sucked for Kelly, he went first, everybody got to watch, and he didn't come in last, yet he was eliminated. No chance to face off 1 on 1, like he had done so so many times before and won.

I'd imagine these anti-military-branch comments are from those who have never served in any branch and probably sit behind a desk themselves.

Just watched the first episode on Hulu. All I have to say is...

"What's 3 gun?" Haha they can't write stuff this funny.

If a 30 yard run makes your heart rate skyrocket or makes you pull a hamstring, you'd better drop the range membership and get a gym membership. The heart blockage is much more of a danger to you than a BG.

Chris Tilley racks the slide on a 1911 like a bada@#$.

This season's going to be good. Looking forward to watching.

And Ashley is prob my fav thus far. The guy can shoot from what I can see.

And I'm STILL not shopping at Bass Pro Shops...no matter how many times they flash the logo. Haha

Anybody watch this episode? Sucks for red team. Someone chopped a ball in the paintball gun. At least the last three shooters had a useless gun. The balls just continue to break in the barrel.

A good episode. More shooting, less Survivor. Although the big mouth getting in Zins' face was not a good idea.

I called it a low budget production. They could not afford the ammo to have more than two people shoot the Thompsons.

I think that's part of the allure, and part of the reason why so many people seem to be saying "*I* could shoot better than that!". They're probably comparing the shooting of these people with random weapons, to their own shooting with their personal weapons that they are intimately familiar with, and quite possibly have custom tailored ammo loaded for.

I personally find it kind of interesting to see a shooting game where they are essentially just thrown into the fray. Here's a weapon - shoot it. It also challenges various skillsets. A benchrest rifle shooter, a trap shooter, and an IPSC shooter are all going to have different strong suits. Just about anyone into guns is passably familiar with just about anything, but the question is how good are you at it?

Just a different take on things.

......"Who doesn't want to see a short, Asian chick kick butt?"

Afraid Athena was full of herself.....fortunately we won't have to endure it anymore. Flaunting her race, size, and that she's got "Championship Titles" said more about her than I cared for. (There's more than a few guys on the show that exhibit similar behavior)

Nothing against accomplished women shooters, but when all your titles are earned against only women....that experience is pretty limited to a small number of shooters.

I've conducted shooting events for years and we kept the women and men classes separate for one basic reason....to entice the gals to "shoot competitively" knowing many would get discouraged and quit if they had to compete against the men. The mens classes are larger and more competitive....hence the competition to make it to the top is much more difficult. Before someone jumps all over me for being against women shooters, I'm not....have had the privilege to know many that have put a few men in their place. My point being that she had a slim chance in this arena because her titles were not earned against the best the men had to offer.

The show gave the arm chair gun owners what they dream of....full auto shootout! That part alone brings out the "Walter Mitty" in shooters. Hopefully we'll see more of this in the future and less sling shots.

Seems that they have backed off of the drama so far this season. I'm liking it.

Rooting for the hometown hero Chris Tilley!

:cuss:... jk, there are some pretty light skinned people on this forum.
I am not going to jump on your post but I just want to say something...
I understand you think she wasnt a super star. But look at the other shooters on the show. She would beat most of those guys in a pistol competition. She made some basic mistakes. Also that gun was not easy to shoot for her. I dont care what the Thompson gun "expert" said.

I see on this forum a lot, "god made men, Samuel colt made them equal" all the time. I am in the Navy and see girls beat guys all the time. it doesn't take a man to pull a trigger. Theres no woman classes in bullseye?

When teaching marksmanship I feel woman learn faster. Guys tend to "know it all"

When i was at Perry I saw lots of girls that were better then guys. Actually they were better the vast majoirty of guys. I just dont think you can generalize a gender. I used to think that way when I joined the navy but there are way to many exceptions.

Look at Gunny Zinns, he has bet EVERYONE. he managed to miss a shot. (with a gun and ammo that probably cant hold a group that tight)
....
Am I the only one who found "we in the military have to shoot to live" funny? seeing how hes in the Air Force, and not a PJ...Please dont edit my post I am just asking

Top Shot, (as correctly pointed out by the shows host), requires far more physical ability than most viewers think. (Also note you see no overweight shooters) The other side of this is the political correctness of TV composition which strives for a proper mixture of each demographic group. The result is we get a mixture of people that are not on the same physical or skill level. Producers try to balance this out in offering a mixture of challenging shooting scenarios that won't favor one discipline over another.

My experience with women shooters has shown they are easier to train and better listeners, but they also have physical limitations that do not make them equal no matter what our "political correct" society would have you believe.

The military's aware of the differences in men and women and reduced the physical expectations in training because they can't perform at the same level as men. I think the producers are aware of this. If asked, the teams would acknowledge they don't put the women shooters out first to bring home the bacon. This became apparent last season when the only lady pretty much sat on the bench till further into the seasons episodes. Women may be more equal driving a truck through the Himalayas but this show is quite different in physical expectations.
