Top ten annoying gun things

I have a few things that irk me or push my buttons;
1) Gun owners or CCW holders who name their carry guns or use them in a personal sense.
Do you name your car?
Yes.
Do you name your garden rake?
maybe
Do you name your flat screen TV?
um.... No?

I've named several of my guns, but more to keep them straight than anything else. One of my Finn-captured Mosin's is named Sebelius. The other one isn't named. One of my VZ-24s is Hedjuk (Milan Hedjuk), the other is Smetena. My Russian M44 is Musorgski and the M38 is Tchaikovsky. One of my Hungarian M44s is Brahms (Hungarian dances). The other Hun M44 is Hrabosky (The mad Hungarian). There are more than that, but I think I've made my point. (No, the point isn't that I'm really weird. That was a given.) When we're packing up to go shooting I can tell my boys the names of the guns I want and they'll pack them up.

We've actually turned it into a bit of a game in our family where I'll tell one of my kids what the name of a gun is, but won't spell it for them and they try to find the connections. Most are composer/music related, but some are hockey or baseball references.

I myself do not quite get why a .22 LR rifle needs a flash suppresor.

Now a .22 win mag, sure, but .22 LR? That is such a low power round... I mean come on.

ruger thought it was a such a great way to protect the muzzle crown on a training rifle that they includes it on the 50th anniversary model of one of the best selling rifles ever produced. I'll go with their logic on this one.

I wish more of my rifles had a flash suppressor instead of an exposed crown, for exactly that reason (protection). I routinely set my AR's muzzle down and leaning against something or in a corner...don't want to do that so much with my .22lr's

the designer of the rifle is actually a contest winner who is a member of THR and posted at length about his rifle design.

There are a few things that get to me...occasionally...

-when its been too long since I bought another gun.

-when its been too long since my last range trip.

-when its been too long since my last reloading session.

-when my reloads don't work "just right".

-when I see that one errant shot that ruins a nice tight group.

Lets go shooting, be safe, and go home smiling!

Mark

Browning:
Good looking rifle! And I like the optic of choice. :D Mine is a 12-42X56. What reticle did you select?

Doc7:
Yeah, how cool is it that a fellow THR member won the contest that brought about that design?! :D

For my part, I will sum it up as follows:
1) Any factory flaw that makes it past quality control, and into market...
2) Inaccurate...
3) Unreliable...

Hunters who think they need a scope for deer hunting when the longest shot they will ever take is less than 100 yards.

I'm one of those people. I don't need the scope, but have one for two reasons.

1. The rifle came with a scope but no irons.

2. Almost anyone is more accurate with a scope than without. Sure, you don't need it, but why you not want the most accurate shot possible when it could mean the difference between a clean kill and the animal running away to die in a thicket 12 hours later?

1. Politicians
2. Gun ranges that treat met like a 5 year old, taking written tests and such before letting me get a lane.
3. The constant 'no, stop asking already' look I get when trying to find .22lr ammunition. (Unless you put up a sign which says you're out, I'm going to ask.)
4. Trying to carry a range bag and double rifle case through the doors in the 2ft by 4ft room between the lobby and range.
5. Hearing gunfire for celebration on July 4th or New Year's Eve.
6. Alcohol in proximity to firearms. If you have to drink to enjoy shooting then it's not the shooting you enjoy.
7. Filling out a Form 4473 for every purchase. The answers haven't changed, and won't. But if you really feel the need to know, yes I did gain 5lbs since my last purchase.
8. Not being able to carry a firearm in my vehicle at work. (Fenced Federal property)
9. Having to send a firearm to the manufacturer for repair.
10. The disgusted 'why didn't you stand in someone else's line' look from airport ticket agents when you tell them you need a firearms declaration form.

Glock-a-alcoholics. But I will admit that I got three S&W’s from one in a FTF sale for about half market value.

Manufactures (Like Beretta) who will only stand behind their product for one year to the original purchaser.

Rifle barrel length restrictions and magazine capacity limits.

I think the idea of a flash suppressor on a .22 is pretty silly BUT the one 10/22 I shot that had one felt like it had a brake on it in stead of a suppressor. I could totally sit on the target without having to settle in for the next shot. Yeah I know that isn't a big problem with .22's anyway but still it was interesting to be able to fire round after round into a tight group without waiting between shots. The owner of that rifle said that's why he installed it and it did seem to work that way. Maybe it was just the power of suggestion. I didn't shoot it that much and that person is known to stretch the truth from time to time.

I'll add.....

These things annoy me too:
People in the general public or local media wags that even in 2014 think only the military or law enforcement have guns:confused: or should be allowed to have guns.
Just because a citizen doesn't own a firearm or is unaware of the gun/carry statues does that mean no one should either?
That to me is like a regular person going up to a pilot & saying; "hey, I can't fly a plane or operate a aircraft so you shouldn't either."
People who say; pistol when they mean a revolver.
Reporters, cops, service members or regular citizens who still think all JHPs or hollow-points are "cop killers" or illegal everywhere.
It's 2014, not 1974. Learn about guns or ammunition then express a opinion.
People or those who work in a armed position(cops, bodyguards, PIs, federal agents, etc) that improperly conceal or can't conceal the sidearm. "Printing" or having your straps/harness/gear showing looks sloppy & unprofessional.
If a person wears a suit 2/3/4 times a year then does it, fine but to be in a office or salary position & "go cheap" is just tacky.
People who can't or won't render a firearm safe(unload it or open the action) before they hand it to you.
People in public who you don't know or never met that tell you how your choices are wrong or your holster/gear is on the wrong way.
As noted earlier, if it was a low end brand like a Jennings or a Hi-Point I could see that but if a armed guard/officer/trooper chooses to wear a item or has it set up a certain way, then so be it. ;)
Years ago, I worked with a few US Dept of Veterans Affairs police who shared the style of carrying handcuff cases upside down. Do all cops or corrections officers do that? No. But saying something would be crass & inappropriate.
Unless something is honestly dangerous or unsafe, Id avoid it.

I can not wait to pull up at the range with my truck that has a 4 inch lift. Once there I'm going to set up some zombie target's and shoot them with some zombie z max ammo that I happen to have. When I'm there I'm not going to put anyone down cause of what they drive, their waistline, tattooing, color of gun, ammo used and targets of choice. I'm going to have a great day at the range shooting!

I'll add mine to the list:

The incredibly ignorant know-it-all who can't shut up about a subject he obviously knows nothing about.

Things like:

"My pal shot a black bear square in the chest at 50 yards with a 30-06 and it just took off like a scared rabbit. The 30-06 just doesn't have what it takes for big game."

"The 38 special is a poor choice for self defense. Especially from a snubbie."

"All (brand name of choice) are better than (brand name of your firearm)."

The fat guy who shows up at the gun range in fatigues and walks around like he's something to feared. I've only seen it a few times, but at some point it's time to put down the GI Joe action figures and act like a normal adult.

These "annoyance" threads are often quite informative. They tend to say a lot about the person posting... ;)

1. AR-15 carbines with bipods.(Cause that 16" barrel is so unwieldy!)
So what? This actually bothers you? Maybe it helps someone make a better shot. If they use the rifle and it gets in the way or is too heavy they'll take it off. Whoop. De. Doo.

2. Canted anything, (So you're saying your eyes aren't straight?)
Ohhhh! So you really don't know what you're talking about? I get it. Go ahead, rant about "canted anything." Meanwhile knowledgeable and successful practical shooters will use a canted grip when shooting handguns because it gets them more hits, faster. And practical rifle shooters will install canted fast-acquisition secondary sights because ... surprise ... it gets them more hits, faster.

But rant on, we need to hear what bothers you.

3. Decals on rifles, Flags, Punisher Skulls, shark mouths, ect... (Operator as <deleted>, huh? ****!)
Yawn. Don't like it? Don't do it. If you get the urge to care what other people put on their guns, sit in a quiet corner and slap yourself repeatedly, with vigor, until the urge passes.

4. Any firearm in a color other than, black, FDE, OD, Urban Gray, or Woodgrain. (It matches your eyes...)
Yawn. Don't like it? Don't buy it. If you get the urge to care what colors other people use on their guns, sit in a quiet corner and slap yourself repeatedly, with vigor, until the urge passes.

5. The Tommy Toughnuts act. (I think my bunny slippers just ran for cover.)
Oh? How about the "I'm too cool for your gun" act where you rant about what other people like or shoot?

Like here. :scrutiny:

6. The AR "gunsmith."(I love that 16x magnification of the front sight tower.)
Wait...you think your sight tower appears in a high-magnification scope view? Remember what I said about posting rants? Bingo!

7. Zombocalypse Kid. (Nice biohazard sign holo sight. Great! Now you're prepped for your financial apocalypse.)
I hate enthusiastic new shooters, too. I wish they'd stick to video games and not become adult gun owners who vote...

8. The Doomsday Prepper: grown-up version of Zombocalypse Kid. (Do you think fifteen Beta mags in my bug out bag are enough?)
Meh. You've got more than me? You're a hoarder/prepper scum. You've got less than me? You're an unprepared fool.

9. The pistol sharpshooter. (Rifle accuracy at 100 yards with a Kel-Tech? Go screw yourself, nobody likes you!)
Sure hate folks who practice. They're stupid.

Don't know why we don't just smile and go on about our own business. Guess minding (and ranting about) what everyone else is doing is more engaging than TV...

How about this abomination Mossberg put out, stuff like this makes me shake my head.
When did 22s start needing 50bmg like muzzle brakes to tame their massive shoulder bruising recoil? Poor barrel looks like it's going to bend.

My pet peeve, especially on this forum, is the people who use slang terms: boolits for bullets, Remmy for Remington, Winnie for Winchester, shotty for shotgun, etc. Call things by their proper names, please!

Ditto

Posts like the OP:

Feeling the need to complain about other people who are *gasp* interested in things you aren't.

Get over it.

This for all ten of my annoyances.

I can never understand the need of some to come to a community forum about guns and criticize, condescend and belittle fellow gun owners. Is it an ego thing or what? Who cares what folks have or how they use them as long as it's done legally, ethically and safely? My grandpa 60 years ago, would have rolled on the ground laughing at folks doing all the tactical drills that are now the "in" thing for SD/HD and the idea that one needed a 30 round magazine for protection. Me, I care less of what other folks use and why. I can respect their decisions and ask they do the same to me. In a time where we are being attacked by folks that want to take away our gun ownership rights, why should we divide and alienate others with a firearm interest?

Sheesh, like Bobson said....get over it.

Sheesh, like Bobson said....get over it.

Because some of the folks you want us to "get over it" with are of the "with friends like this who needs enemies" type of gun owner. Walking around the mall in cammies and carrying an AK is just one of several versions of that type of gun owner we should be criticizing. These gun owners alienate the people who are at least neutral on gun control and increase the virulence of anti-gunners.

1) ignoring simple safety rules
2) ignoring simple safety rules
3) pointing your 1911 at me and whining about how it "isnt even loaded" after i ream you about it
4) flagging myself or my wife with an "unloaded" firearm.
5) bringing "randoms" to the range.
6) the old guys that think i shouldnt have firearms because i have lots of visible tattoos, you have no idea how many times ive been asked how i bought my guns and arent you a felon.

Its just really those 6, the first 5 are because i shoot with the same group of guys that didnt grow up hunting and shooting like i did, were working on safety, really working on it. I havent had an errant pistol pointed at me in 6 months. And weve only had one "random" shown up in a year i think ive made my point on that. And i think #6 is really a regional thing.

I don't know that I have 10. I don't get irate all that often. Here are the ones I can think of that are particular to me. I haven't included stuff that makes us all furious, such as gun counter Bubbas spouting nonsense and people who are unsafe or disrespectful at the range.

1.) Items that downplay the seriousness of a firearm. I do not like "Zombie" ammo or things like that. These are not paintball guns.

2.) I actually like caliber war discussions, but I can't stand anyone who just refuses to admit any sort of merit in cartridges they do not prefer, as though they are the only ones smart enough to see the truth. This includes people who claim that .40 has literally no advantage over 9mm, people who claim that 9mm is useless, people that claim .45 is super powerful, and every mix-and-matched combination of this. The most popular calibers are popular for a reason. They each do something well. You're not smarter than the rest of us for disagreeing with that. You just disagree. Which is fine, but don't be a jerk.

3.) People who like to pop off with something snarky about Glock or 1911. Stop being a hipster. Again, they are crazy popular for a reason. Doesn't mean you have to like them or agree with the reason, but you're not privy to some deep truth about them that the rest of us are missing.

4.) Trigger snobs. Good lord, the discussion that goes into triggers on gun forums is insanity. A decent shooter can adjust to a trigger on a serious work gun. If you are talking about your competition/race gun, yes, by all means, talk all day about tiny, feather-light trigger distinctions, but for a defense/duty gun, trigger should be considerably behind other considerations like reliability, toughness, weight, heft, grip, etc. If the trigger is a decent weight, you can adjust to it. I shoot a Beretta 92 and a Glock both quite well, and they are quite different. Sure, I prefer hammer to striker, but I won't lament and moan about a trigger that's not my ideal.

5.) Worship of a new gun design. VP9 is the latest offender, but there is a new one all the time. A gun that has zero track record, even a gun from an esteemed maker, should not immediately be thrown into the discussion about whether it's better than guns established as reliable and fundamentally sound design. The gun community is skeptical about so much, but for some reason not the latest popular gun. Even I hopped aboard the Remington R51 train at first, and we saw how fast that went south.

That's all I have for now. So I guess those would be my top 5.

I should define more on the "brass vulture" comment:

At our range, at times we have, generally retired gentlemen, shooting the breeze. They will pick up brass, but only after a shooter has left the range. I have even had them, while they were chatting next to me, pick my brass up and put it on my table. Thanks guys! :)

It is the ones that show up solely to get brass and become a distraction to other shooters. I have seen them literally inches from peoples feet, grabbing brass, freshly ejected.

There are quite a few new members at this range. And if this has happened to a guest, I doubt that they would want to become a member there.
