slightly off topic, but both my yugo m59 and yugo 59/66 are pretty easy to get an 11th round in, though i've yet to figure out why i keep doing it.
this has not adversly effected the reliability of these rifles, simply press the rounds down slightly, lay another round on top and make sure the bolt clears the rounds in the mag.

If the SKS is at best marginal as a combat weapon then why was it so commonly issued to the NVA and Viet Cong over the AK47?
There is of course the option to install the Chinese 20-round fixed magazine which I have found to work flawlessly on my rifle.

can the garand ammo be ejected at all? i thought the garand had 8 shots and you couldnt drop em to stick a new clip in. ive never owned a garand so i am unfamiliar.
with a sks you can drop the half full box and close up and stick a new stripper in. i thinks thats what they mean by top off. as in you dont have to shoot em all to reload it.

If an SKS is only marginally effective.....
vs an AK, why do they shoot the same ammo????? Just shoot the bloody thing until it is empty and reload. If you can't get out of a situation with 10 rounds, you are in the wrong place, or you can't shoot worth crap......spray and pray will never replace aimed rifle fire......chris3

Topping off is usually meant to be replenishing a
partially depleted magazine in a gun with a
non-detachable magazine.
Topping off is not really an issue with a detachable
magazine: you just swap out a full magazine.
Topping off is easy to do with a tube magzine lever
action or pump action.
With the SKS or M1 Garand, the usual thing iis to
empty the magazine and do a full reload, because
topping off is not convenient and requires clearing
the firing chamber.
