A gunman has been shot dead by a police sniper and his hostage freed after a rush-hour standoff outside of Union Station on Front St. this morning....

This took place just outside the central subway/train station in Toronto this morning. Looks like the guy had a sawed-off shotgun or some type of jury-rigged gun - the pictures are too blurry for me to tell. Police sniper killed him with a single shot. Story and details - Toronto Star

Now wait for calls for increased gun control

Good shooting. Canadian snipers have an excellent reputation.

Amazing how people just hang around when a BG is waving a gun. Makes the job tougher for the LEO's trying to contain the situation.

Another person that couldn't handle the threat of a potential lockout in the NHL

How could this have happened?

I thought that Canada's gun control regulations and registration program and its compassionate social programs made it a violence-free utopia!

Ya know, after squinting real hard at the picture (yeah, real scientific, I know) it almost looks like a chopped up Marlin 60. I dunno..

Oh, that's horrible. "Why couldn't they have just shot him in the leg?"

:D

Just kidding. Good shot! It stopped that threat and all future threats presented by him.

I couldn't make it out myself, but one one witness statement suggests a little to back up that theory

"Nov, a former Israeli soldier, heard "two pops" and quickly hustled his family and employees into the walk-in freezer of his countertop eatery, Pumpernickel Catering"

Granted we don't know where he heard the shots from, but "pops" sounds more like .22 than other rifle or shotgun to my ear.

duh, Im stupid.
If it is indeed a chopped .22, then it is not a Mod 60. Has to be box fed mag, not tubular. So yes, probably more like a 10/22 or Rem 597.
