I took my Savage Model 12 out hunting and got caught in a rain. I need to take it apart and remove the stock to get it cleaned and lubed properly to avoid any possible corrosion down the road. Does anyone know what torque settings (in/lbs) should be used on the action screws when reattaching the stock? I would like to get it back to factory specs so as to hopefully keep close on my scope sight in. Any info would be appreciated. I tried calling Savage but they are shut down til Monday the 14th.
Thanks

The factory will tell you 25 inch-lbs, the hot Savage gunsmith says "hand tight", and a lot of other people seem to do 45 on wood, and up to 65 on pillar bedded synthetic. The amount you use shouldn't effect your sight in though, but will affect accuracy.

The FV is a pillar bedded synthetic if it has the original stock, so it should go back very close to zero regardless. I tighten them until they snug, then go another 1/2 turn or so. I would still test shoot it before taking it afield though.

It's still got the original stock, so I guess I will try the 25in/lb factory suggested setting. Thanks for the input!

I've got a 12FV and always just snug them enough so there is no movement and don't work their way loose. My scope zero and grouping haven't changed.
Hope things go well.

Thanks Nv, that's good to hear. I'll take it out Saturday and check the zero and grouping.
