Tough Living Conditions Decision

A quick question about some difficult decisions of where to live.

This August, I start Masters work, about a two year program regardless of where I live, and I have been accepted at Trinity Western in Vancouver, Wheaton College in Ill., (both of which I would be living off campus) and Hebrew University in Israel. I figure that Israel is a straight NO for taking firearms. However, what about the other two? What do you think about my options, and what can you tell me about the Wheaton College and Vancouver, BC options? I have my CC permit from Texas, but am not really sure if that would apply in Ill., and have no hope for Vancouver. However, I would love to take some long guns if the decision ends up being Canadian terretory. I have some family up there, and hear the elk are great, and Saskatewan deer are monsters. I personally find it rather ironic that as one of the two "gun geeks" of my family I am forced into a situation with these options!!

Regardless of the caliber of Wheaton, Illinois grants its law abiding residents NO concealed OR open carry rights...LEO only. Terrible place to live if you CC and aren't LE. Sorry, I'm no help with Vancouver.
 
If you want to hunt then go to Vancouver. You can have long guns (with some hoops, of course) but no CC.

Thanks, glad to know about that, on both accounts. As for Wheaton, can I even TAKE the Kimber/Python/S&W etc? I would assume that our rights havn't eroded THAT far... !..? :( Even without CC I definatley don't fancy leaving my guns somewhere else for a couple years, thats for sure. Thanks for the replies.

I opt for Israel - in my various visits there (work related) everyone carries, so even if you don't or can't you'll be safer. It's also a great cultural experience, the others would be boring by comparison.

I will be in Israel from June-August doing some research work and learning Hebrew, so will have an opportunity to see what its like. I find the possibility of spending two years there attractive - however, I have been out of the States alot in the last couple years, and have looked forward to getting back. We live in a great country, and I miss it!! Currently in Stuttgart, and the German societal system, though they have great people, is fast breeding an even deeper distrust of government... Lord, lets not let the US of A get there! :D Not to wax to patriotic or anything. But there really isn't anywhere on this great planet like it, even with its faults.

Regardless, those are the options, and we will see how they work out. You mentioned carrying in Israel: I just assumed that as a non-citizen that was out, like in the States. Are there possibilities for that? Figured they were slim to none.

I agree completely. I've lived off-shore a few times as a civilian (New Zealand, Switzerland and Hong Kong - just before the snatch by PRC) and there is no where as good as here. We enjoy freedoms here that others can't even imagine.

zuh? We talking about the same Israel? Carrying a gun there isn't nearly as easy as everybody seems to think it is. They have a lengthy and excruciating application process just to purchase. If we're talking about soldiers lugging their rifles around, don't expect them to jump in the middle of a carjacking.

That said(tm), in Israel, like no other place I've been, I felt that I would be safer breaking the law on this one. Not something I would necessarily recommend, but I did what I felt was right. Fortunately, I didn't have occasion to find out if I was really right or wrong.

No, you can certainly bring and use your handguns to Illinois. Not in Chicago proper but there are still a few opportunities here in Illinois. Good pheasant/rabbit hunting in Iowa and central Illinois. Good deer in southern Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

If you decide on Wheaton, make sure you let us know...plenty of THR-ers around here will show you the ropes.

I have no idea what hoops you will have to bring guns into the US.

Thanks for the input. I will keep in touch and let you know how things progress. If I end up at Wheaton, I will definately be bringing my guns, though apparently not carrying at all :mad: As for bringing guns into the States... no worries, my guns are in the States with family. Just a last note, I have been a frequent browser and reader, but havn´t posted much. I'Ve enjoyed THR very much, and if I do end up in Ill it would be great to get together with some of yall. Actually, last year I somehow ended up in Terlingua with Art, Byron, and several others along with my brother - that was a great time, and definately hooked me into the community. There are some great people around here. If you are anything like the folks down in Texas, would love to hook up with some of yall in Wheaton.

Just a little extra information concerning hunting in Illinois. For deer you can NOT use a rifle, shotgun w/slugs only, muzzleloader or certain handguns (no semis and restrictions on cartridge types). If you are in to varmit hunting through, you can use any rifle you want, unless you are on certain state ground, then its shotgun only (but you can't use slugs) or rimfire rifles.

No CCW does suck, but it could be worse, I'm just not sure how.

What? Illinois lets you hunt deer, but not with a rifle?!? What possible reason is there to allow muskets, pistols, and shotguns, but not rifles? No wonder so many Illini come up here to hunt...I had always sort of wondered.

I knew my neighbors to the south had some weird laws, but that's just...I don't even have the word. Asinine is as close as I can come.

You can't hunt deer with a rifle in Illinois because most of the state is flat and fairly densly populated. Houses, roads, highways, high powered rifles and those who get out once a year to shoot at a deer aren't a good mix.

I'd like to see them open Southern Illinois up to rifles but I don't see it happening. I do see the stereotypical slob hunter (probably from Chicago, the only time he ever shoots his rifle is during deer season) unloading a 30.06 or .308 as fast as he can work the action at a running deer and causing an unfortunate incident that could cause a backlash against hunting and shooting.

For some reason deer season brings that type of sportsman :rolleyes: into the woods where the other hunting seasons don't. I think DNR was right on with that restriction. I see people down here empty their shotguns at running deer. The terrain here is such that you could do that safely with a rifle, but a couple of counties North and it's an anti hunters dream story. I can see the Chicago Tribune headlines about how mothers can't let their children venture into the yard during the two firearm deer seasons in my minds eye.

You get used to the shotgun only rule and since where I hunt is thick woods with normal shots being less than 50 yards it doesn't bother me.

On the other hand, where I hunt for the "late season antlerless only" deer, I could have a .50bmg and still not cover everything, but then again, the deer are so think in that area that you would be done in 5 minutes or less.
 
Most of Illinois is OK with firearms. It is only Chicago and some of the elitist suburbs that have local draconian laws. One thing to note, however, is that Illinois does not allow Class III items, but we are not alone in that regard.

Being in the northern part of Illinois kind of limits the places you can shoot rifles. I know of a place in Bristol Wisconsin, but have never been there. I generally go to the ISRA range outside of Kankakee, or to a public range in the great state of Indiana.
 
As long as your a non-resident, I don't think you need a FOID, just a drivers license from out of state. If you become a resident and have a Illinois drivers license, then you will need one.

You may have a problem buying ammo though, some stores (wal-mart) tend to make up there own policies about who the can and can not selll ammo to based on what state your drivers license is from. I saw this happen first hand once when some people from Florida tried to buy some ammo and the sportings goods manager said they had to have a out of state hunting license or be from a neighboring state. It didn't make sense but wal-mart does what wal-mart wants.
 
I'm from Fl and tried to buy some ammo that was on sale at Gander Mtn in Peoria. It was a really good deal so I grab mine and go up to pay and the girl says FOID card. I said "what"? She said I needed a foid card to buy. I said I wasn't from there and she said sorry. The ast manager comes over and says sorry too. My Brother in Law was there and we used his foid to buy it. I probably shouldn't have but it was some heavy shot gun loads not normaly found in FL without mailordering. :confused:
 
Looks like you're going to be undertaking some religious studies, and I'm guessing Jewish at that. Any other schools available where you wouldn't have these issues? Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio might be an option, and though Ohio gun laws aren't as good as some of us would like, you can bring about anything you want.
