When I placed my order at SHOT the nice folks at STI invited me up for a factory tour, so I made the drive up this morning.

It is quite an impressive operation. All parts, including magazines and small parts like sears and firing pins, are made in house, and the amount of machinery and cutting tools is simply amazing. I think the neatest part of the tour was seeing the step by step process on each part . . .you can really see the parts evolve in each step. They have sheet metal at one stage which is bent at another and welded at another and then has cuts put into it. Voila! A magazine is born. I got to watch similar processes for the frames, slides, magwells, and sears. I don't know much about machine work, and those of you who do probably wouldn't have been as fascinated, but I was pretty much in awe at the whole system.

Everyone there was a class act and they were happy to answer all of my questions. Great folks and a great company.

Now that is a tour I'd like to take! So much better than the elementary school field trips I went on... including the one where Mike Brown jumped into a vat of poo at the sewage plant.

Ask them when they're gonna sell in Cali again. :scrutiny:

I need one of them 9mm Trojan 5.0's. :(

Where is the factory? Isn't it in Georgetown somewhere? I live in Hutto so a field trip may be on the agenda since I am but 15 minutes away. If I could afford an STI I'd jump all over it!

nice people up there. i met Joe Boone who is one of their gunsmiths. he told me to come by one day for a factory tour....i've been too busy as of yet but i do want to go by there.

it's neat that so many cool manufacturers are in the Austin area: LaRue Tactical, Dawson Precision, STI Manufacturing, Chip McCormick....just to name a few!

If you get some free time it is well worth the trip Steve.

Yeah, I didn't realize they were all here until I got on the plane for SHOT and everyone was wearing a gun related t-shirt. Fun flight.
