WOW! Now there's a novel idea, citizenry standing behind their Police Officers. Kudos to those good town folks to take time and money to help the local boys in blue stay safe.

Great! Our dept purchases vests, for those who want them. Great insurance, since I would get killed if I did not wear it. Not by gunfire, the wife!

Many years ago, (more than I would like to think!), our local gun club bought the FIRST protective vest ever owned by the local city police department. Other businesses, etc, pitched in and outfitted the rest pretty soon thereafter.

What good does it do it the officers don't wear the vests? :banghead:

This wasn't a case where the cop didn't have a vest, he just wasn't wearing it.

From the article

Officer Williams had a vest, but wasn't wearing it that day in June and it probably wouldn't have helped him anyway because of where the bullet hit him

One big thing it would do, make the vest much wearable. The newer the vest, the thinner, lighter, and cooler. Wearing a ballistic vest is a very uncomfortable experiance, akin to wearing a rain jacket where ever you go. The more wearable a vest the more likely a person is to wear it. Vests have come a long way in just the last 2 years. They are now about 1/2 as thick/heavy as they use to be and are much more flexible.

All the best

that is great that the police department in that area keeps such great relations with their people, that they are willing to chip in and help keep their LEO's safe. unfortunately, there are a lot of departments out there with too many thugs with badges... and the majority of people wouldnt piss on them to put them out if they were on fire.

I can go ya one better.

The school kids in my home town had a drive to raise money to buy one of the police dogs a vest. They raised so much money, they could buy BOTH dogs a new vest each.

We bought the officers vests years ago.

One small town near by bought their Sheriff's Deputy's new stainless S&W 686 revolvers some years ago.

My town pitched in and bought our 26 officers each an AR-15. :neener:

Note: I think it was AR-15's. All they said was, "Each rifle is just over $700," and a mention that they were modeled after a current military rifle.
