AARP membership= NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!

NRA membership= Life Member

The NRA has made some judgement errors, no doubt, but they have done more for gunowners and shooters than any other organization.
IMHO if you are a gun owner and not an NRA member you are either a part of the problem or have not yet realized their importance and contributions to the cause.

This was the AARP's official position in 2000 on federal gun legislation:

"The federal government should continue to regulate the availability of handguns and semiautomatic and automatic weapons. Congress should eliminate the 1998 expiration date for the Brady bill’s five-day waiting period and should leave in place the assault weapons ban."

Does anyone know what their current official position is?

Hate to spoil the party, but I've been a member of AARP for a number of years. I like the purpose and the discounts and ignore the politics (same as I do with the NRA).

No, I don't like their position on guns but I figure I have a better chance of making my viewpoint heard as a member than as an easily ignored outsider.

Texas Bill from what I've seen of AARP's purpose, it's selling insurance, selling seniors short so that they can promote their socialist agenda, and being totally anti-gun. I've got about as much use for their "purpose" as I do for a festering boil on my backside.

Whenever my wife or I get mail from AARP it goes in the circular file without opening, and that's been happening for over 30 years because they've been sending me their garbage since before I was 40.

I don't buy the insurance, but the various discounts are nice. I haven't seen them selling seniors any shorter than the NRA has sold gun owners and I get a steady stream of stuff from the NRA wanting me to take out a new credit card, buy a new car, buy insurance, wine, etc., just like I get from AARP. However, I have no intention of dropping my membership in either organization.

Just got my first application to join. In red marker I wrote NO to YOU, NO TO OBAMACARE on the app and exterior of the envelope. Like other posters I don't care what the discount is. There's an old saying regarding something being the same whether it's done for a dollar of a million dollars. I also like to use their dime to spread my message.

I have always been able to get discounts on my own...usually at a minimum of equal to the NRA or AARP discount. Sometimes more. You simply have to ask for it . Did you know even Walmart will knock off $10 on a oil change simply by asking the automotive service manager for the discount??
That said.....I belong to the NRA to keep my guns. But I pay yearly dues. I make them prove to me every year that I still want to be a member.Following blindly is not my style.
AARP is not worth anything to me.
