Trade an S&W 28-2 for a 57? Should I do it?

I have a six inch S&W model 28-2 (.357 mag) in about 90% cosmetic condition that a buddy of mine wants. He has a six inch model 57 (.41 mag) in similar condition that he wants to trade. He doesn't reload, and the price of .41 mag ammo is getting to him. Plus, he'd like to shoot .38 special through it.

I reload, so other than needing to get a set of dies, it's not too big of a deal. My only concern is whether the .41 mag is too much of an overlap with my .44 mags.

Thanks,

-John

I would gladly make that trade. I see many more 28-2's than I do 57's. heck, i have bought 2 28-2's this last year, but i don't even remember seeing a 57 recently.A .41 mag is an itch I have been thinking about scratching though.

If it were me, I would most definitely do that trade. Had a 4" Model 57 years ago that I had to sell due to economic conditions at the time. Would love to have another one again.

conditions close,i would trade. i am not a long range revolver shooter, so a 4-6 inch revolver would be fine to me. a large bore working revolver with a 4-6 inch barrel carries nice and doesn,t get in the way. eastbank.

I like everthing about the M28-2 except the cartridge. There is not a lot about the M57 I like so for me, I would keep the M28-2 and do a little gunsmithing.

If both guns were in comparable condition I would make the trade in a NY minute and wouldn't look back.

I would. Shot mine last Sunday. Nice!

Overlap? I suppose a little. Wouldn't stop me.

After you trade, post a pic in the .41 Mag club thread.

I'm a .41mag fan and have both a 57 and 28-2. The .41 is a not fine, but GREAT round. Tough call, though. Using lead bullets the .41 is not too much more costly to reload than the .38/.357. I think of the .41 more as a .357mag on super steroids than as a junior .44.

In a heartbeat.

My only concern is whether the .41 mag will cause me to sell off my .44 mags.
There. Fixed it for you.
And yes, it is a valid concern. I started with three .44s, bought two .41s, sold three .44s and (unfortunately) my 6" M-57.
I still have a 4" M-57, though, and it's not going anywhere.

If I had to make a list of the .41 Mag's deficiencies:
--non-availability of Speer shot capsules to make snake shot.

End of list.

I would, unless the 28 has some emotional attachment. Mine was inherited from grandfather, so I wouldn't let it go. I love both revolvers, though I stupidly got rid of my 57 4" a long time ago. The 57 is more valuable. I'd trade for the 57 and buy another 28!

I would also make that trade. The 41 is a great caliber that a reloader can really take advantage of.

Since you handload, and since .41 bullets are available (I like Berry's 210gr plated), I say make the trade.

I like the .41 so much that I hardly ever shoot .44 revolvers anymore.

Howdy

Well, I appear to be the only nay sayer. Never been interested in the 41 Mag. Just not interested. I have a couple of Model 28s. If somebody offered to trade me one for a 41 Mag I would say no thanks.

If one had neither, I would say get the 28 first, for a number of reasons, but for someone who has another, or more, .357 revolvers, I would say trade the 28, as it is a good trade, and another 28 will come along at a good price before another 57 does.

Thanks, fellas, for the advice. I'm a little surprised that it was so lopsided! I'm going to check out his model 57 tomorrow.

Thanks,

-John
