Trade an S&W 28-2 for a 57? Should I do it?

A 57 is a first line gun, whereas a 28 is the "economy" model. Yes, I know that functionally it is completely the equal of a 27, but the 57 has the deep polished blue that collectors like.

If I didn't own another 357 I would keep the 28, or make plans to buy a new one, but if it were me I would make the trade. Even discounting all other factors it's an economically beneficial trade based on resale value alone.

I have a six inch S&W model 28-2 (.357 mag) in about 90% cosmetic condition that a buddy of mine wants. He has a six inch model 57 (.41 mag) in similar condition that he wants to trade. He doesn't reload, and the price of .41 mag ammo is getting to him. Plus, he'd like to shoot .38 special through it.

I reload, so other than needing to get a set of dies, it's not too big of a deal. My only concern is whether the .41 mag is too much of an overlap with my .44 mags.

Thanks,

-John
The .41magnum is to revolver what 16ga is to a shotgun. Guessing it isn't going to be even trade I would not do it. Maybe it's just me but less common S&W revolvers do nothing for me. Just seen .32Magnum S&W target revolver that hasn't been made in over 20 years and how many does one see? I would not buy it because I have no reason to own that chambering.

Pablo;

I see your point of view completely. I guess I'm sort of the opposite. I drool over .32 H&R mag revolvers, and love the cartridge. I really dig those weird cartridges. Then again, I reload, so there's no penalty for shooting or using them.

I guess I'll be one of the very few nay-sayers too. I'm a .357 Magnum guy and I really like the M28 and would not trade my only M28 for a M57. I have nothing against the .41 Magnum and I feel it was a victim of being developed too late in history but I still like the .357 Magnum best.

If it were a 4" model it would probably make a great woods carry revolver.

Make the trade. The Model 57 is the more valuable gun and you are helping your friend shoot more. Personally I don't care for an N frame chambered in .357. In fact the new 5 shot .44 Magnum L framed revolver looks interesting.

Buy the Model 57 for a good price and he can go find something in 357 Magnum.

Yes, not what one normally sees, but in target revolver from professional perspective it's better proposition then .357 or .41 though .327 chambering would be more versatile.

41 Magnum sounds like an awesome round. Although a bit expensive to find if you dont reload. But if it was me, i d get it.

I'd probably due the trade. I've always felt the N frame guns in 36 calibre were too heavy and overbuilt. The 41 is a better use of all that steel. It's a moribund but servicable calibre kept alive by a small but dedicated group of fans. The downside is components and loaded ammunition are harder to find and more expensive than more common calibres.

BYJO4, you are correct about the .41. For field work, deer hunting, hogs, etc, it's a good as it gets. The S&W 57 is a very fine gun and beautiful to look at. It thrives on weenie loads all the way up to real-world .44mag power.

I would do that trade in a New York minute. As has been stated a few times already, there are lots of Model 28's out there but much fewer Model 57's. I picked up a 57 a couple of years ago and I like it so much that if I chance across another (and the price is right) I am going to buy it.
