The trade name guns have always intrigued me and I want a trade name .22lr preferably a bolt action that has a grooved receiver. But I have no idea witch ones are good, witch ones i should avoid etc.. Any info or links would be appreciated, I haven't found much only cross references to who actually made what. Thanks

I assume you are talking about guns sold by places like Sears, Montgomery Wards, some of the sporting goods/hardware chains, etc. using their own brand like JC Higgins, Glenfield etc??

Most were manufactured by Mossberg and Marlin. Some by Remington and Winchester. If you have a Blue Book of Gun Values, the current edition has a cross refernce guide in the back that lists many of the guns with the model number and original manufacturer. I believe some of the older editions do as well.

They are generally as good as the same rifle sold under the manufacturer's name.

j.c. higgins is a good one; made by several diff companies to include High Standard. also montgomery wards would be good, western auto, and of course glenfields made by marlin. J.C. Penny's got in rifles from Parker Hale, which if they produced a 22, would have to be about as good as it gets, since their centerfires are super fan freakin tastically top notch and good and beautiful.

If you're going to buy an old store brand .22 rifle, you might want to check Numrich Gun Parts for parts availability before you buy. I have some Montgomery Wards and Sears rifles that are from the 40s, 50s, and 70s that needed a few parts. http://www.e-gunparts.com/dept.asp

Mossberg made many good bolt action rifles sold under the Western Field name.
