Hi

I found an old gun of my grandfather's that is a J.C. Higgins 12 gauge bolt action rifle. I'd like to find out more info about it if possible.(Date of manufacture, etc.) All I know that it was made or sold by Sears and named, I believe, after someone who had worked there at the time.

On the barrel, "PROOF TESTED-12 GA. FULL 2 3/4 CHAMBER" is engraved.

Any additional information will be greatly appreciated.

That would be a shotgun, not a rifle. I have one that belonged to my grandfather too, though it's a 16 gauge.

I actually had one. Great slug slinger and for bird and buck the choke takes some getting used too. DO NOT TRUST THE SAFTY AT ALL. Friend of mine killed my couch.

There should be a number like 583.11 or something similar on the receiver or barrel.
Format xxx.xxx. That's how we can identify who made the rifle. :)

Do a search in the Shotgun forum (bolt action)----you'll see a lot of info for them there. I actually have four of them, all being the ones that were recalled by Sears. It'll behoove you to research why they did that....

Wonderful old gun. Make sure the bolt stop screw on the left side of the receiver is tight and not stripped. Shoot and enjoy.
