I mentioned to a coworker that I wanted a J frame, but that I might have to trade my current carry gun, an STI Spartan IV in 9mm for it. He showed interest, and told me he had a 642 that he's be willing to part with.

With my gun comes with 550 rounds of 9mm, 50 rounds of Gold Dots, 3 holsters that I paid about $200 for. He wants all of it.

The 642 comes with nothing. He said he may have 100 rounds of .38 somewhere.

Both guns are in excellent condition, the STI has some holster wear, but is in otherwise great condition.

How much cash should I be asking for on top? The STI's new price was almost twice as much as the J frame, and although I know holsters don't really add a lot of value, he's extremely interested in them.

I'd keep the Spartan and save up for a J Frame if you want a J Frame that badly.

I'd normally agree with you, and that's what I originally intended to do, but funds are tight right now. I could definitely use a lighter, more concealable gun, and could really use the cash on top.

Browsing thru Slick Guns to get pricing ideas a 642 will currently run you $360 to $400 new, while a Spartan IV is running $640 to $740 new. So, on average, the Spartan is $300 more new than a 642 or similar aluminum frame .38 Spl J Frame. It's been a while since I've worked for a local FFL, but I think most stores that deal in used guns would give you $200 for a used J Frame, and $400 for a used Spartan.

So, I'd ask for his gun and $200 just for your Spartan alone. With ammo pricing and availability like it is now I'd swap him even round for round on ammo, and then ask 80% of current retail for the rest of your ammo. I'd ask 50% of the price you paid new on the holsters if they're in at least very good condition.

I think those are fair starting points. I wouldn't budge much, if any, off the $200 on the guns themselves. If I needed the cash badly (and I've been there with medical problems in the past) I'd let him talk me down a bit on the ammo and holsters if it's necessary to make the deal go through.

Ugaarguy's right on. If I wanted to consider such a trade, I'd be asking for probably around $350 cash on top, IF he's a good friend.

Thank you, both. I think that's a pretty fair place to start negotiations. Like I said, he's very interested in both the gun, and the extras. I just want it to be a fair deal for both of us, but had no idea where to start.
