Well, I know it has just been about a week ago since I posted that I picked up a 1911, but I decided that I just didn't like shooting it (and I don't believe in learning to like a gun). I traded it for a Springfield XDM 40 that I absolutely love. I had an XD 40 a few years ago that I always regretting getting rid of.

I've come full circle, and glad to be back. :)

I was just curious why is the 1911 .45 ACP so popular as it has a following?
Is it me or is it that this gun fits my hand better than all other handguns?
Is it because there are lots of aftermarket parts you can add to it to make it different like a 10/22?

Hey, if you don't like them, you don't like them. The 1911 is my favorite auto pistol by far, but not everyone likes them.

1911s are beautiful works of art. For me, however, they just don't work for practicality. My hands are tiny, and the grip of the 1911 feels huge. They're heavier than I'm used to. The safeties and hammer don't appeal to me. I don't even like their light triggers! LOL... Beautiful works of art with tremendous historical value--and have earned my respect. I just do not like to carry or shoot one. I'm a Glock man through-and-through... though I like the XDMs quite a bit, too.

Perhaps people don't feel comfortable with the cocked and locked concept.
I like the look, handling and feel of the 1911 in my hands. But I just don't understand why there is a large following of hangunners who prefer this design single action only, cocked n locked. I have heard of the pros n cons of Single action vs. Double action.

I too am used to revolvers or a Glock-not in cocked position as far for civilian duty vs. being in a war...The P-220 Sig that is both single and double action would appear to be the best of both worlds except it and none of the above guns feel as good in my hand and grip as the 1911. Also consider that the newer design of the other guns one would think would be superior to the 100 year old design of the 1911. Like everything else things evolve and get improved over time.

Yes I agree the 1911 is a classic and beautiful as it does look awesome still after 100 years. Used extensively in just about all of the wars we have had.
Don't see any police agencies using them so I wonder if there is some kind of higher liability with this 1911 design perhaps of accidental discharge? I don't know. But the police must have their arms in the ready state where they might have the chance to rack the slide in single action.

Each person is different so you will have likes and dislikes. Congrats on finding something that feels good in your hand. I find the firearms I really like get shot a lot more than the ones that I'm neutral on in terms of feel.

cost and weight , we have a few counties here in WI that carry 1911 but most carry some sort of light, low cost, poly gun in 40S&W like M&P's and glocks can't say I have seen any LEO's with XD's but I'm sure there are a few of them too , I was talking to a Wood Co. cop last summer , He is the one that told me Portage Co. got new 1911 Kimbers at about $1400.00 each , and he wish are Co. would go to them , I told him not to hold his breath , you could get 4 glocks for that !

I agree some of these 1911's are just outrageously priced. It's a gun that can be highly customized. They say you got to have at least one 1911 in your collection and mine would be a RIA Tactical 1911 .45 ACP full size. Now perhaps if I was going to spend that kind of money $1,000 I would go for a Sig P-220 standard or Equinox .45 DA/SA. Feel more comfortable that its DA/SA just like a revolver and ready to go and safer.

$1150.00 for my S&W1911 and I'd do it again , love it, I have friend who has an XD, he love it too, each is to there own

I love 1911's but they aren't for everyone. Sounds like you performed an experiment, and took corrective action.

Now don't talk yourself into one again. If you don't like shooting one now, you likely never would.

:D :what:I can't hear you.

1911's are like a trophy wives. They are beautiful, feel great in your hands and are fun to fondle and show off to your friends, but from a practical standpoint there are others that do everything better.

Hanzo581, that's probably the best explanation I've heard, haha.

I guess I'm lucky, though, because I love the CZ75 platform, and find them as attractive (if not more so) than most 1911s, and they certainly shoot better for me.

...i'm just gonna take the high road and let this be my reply to your statement,

Like a Sig P-220?

Let's not do the 1911 argument thing. Some like em, some don't, some think they are the bomb, and some don't.

Congrats on the new XDM, I personally love my Colt 1911, they really are works of art. On the other hand I enjoy shooting my glocks as well. Everyone has different likes that they are entitled to. Enjoy it!
