For a hunting trip.

I've asked on this forum before about the possibilities for a Norwegian to hunt in the US without going trough an agency. I learned that it wasn't the easiest thing to do, but I'm still gonna give this a shot.

Is there anyone who has hunting grounds/rights, who wants to trade?
Here in Norway I have moose, roe deer and beaver available. There's also small game like grouse, capercaille, hare and so on. I'm looking to surprise my dad, who has gotten some bad news recently. If I could take him on a hunting trip to the states for some deer, birds or other "easy" game it would be fantastic.
(Easy as in not freezing my butt off looking for a puma in five feet of snow.)
In exchange you're welcome to my farm in fall season.

This is just to see if there are any possibilities, alot of things have to add up for such a long trip. But you'll never get anywhere without the first step...

Anyone interested?

Yeah, that part I forgot... I'm thinking fall, October/November-ish.

I've done this a few times and it has worked great. So far it has happened with friends, acquaintances, business associates and even complete strangers from Wisconsin, Spain, Estonia and South Africa, and while the usual nordic game species like moose, bear, roe deer, capercaillie, black grouse, snow grouse etc. are common, there's a very solid introduced whitetail population in southern Finland. Fallow deer and wild boar are spreading rapidly in coastal regions too.

While this probably isn't of much assistance to you unless you're looking for the easiest and shortest possible whitetail hunting trip from Norway, I can subjectively recommend "exchanges" or "trades" like these. Hunters are a tight-knit community all around the world and it's amazingly easy to find common ground with fellow hunters no matter where they're from. I've met a number of people for the first time when I've picked them up at the airport or arrived at one myself and based on my experiences I'm in for any kind of hunt exchange around the world. It's a lot of fun for everybody, and a chance to hunt species you've never thought you would, in good company.

He already hunts in Denmark, Czech Rep., Poland and Scotland. And a lot of those trips is friends of friends, and tradeoffs like what I'm trying noe. But he has never hunted in the US. His first, and so far only, trip over the Atlantic was last year. And that was for visiting relatives after his uncle passed.

Pressed the button too soon, I meant to write more...

So he didn't have time for hunting. And for a Norwegian, Arizona and Nevada is a bit too hot anyway...

I'm also hoping to make some new friends in this. I've said it before, this is my favourite US forum, and it would be really cool to make some lasting connections.

If somebody has private ground this will be a great hunt. I am not going to throw my name in as I primarily hunt public ground and I wouldn't want to make any promises I couldn't keep. A deer lease in Texas or something similar with high game populations would be a perfect place for this trade to take place.

Also it is a steaming, horrible pain in the rear for sportsmen to bring guns into the USA. I highly recommend that Olsen's dad use a local borrowed firearm while here. Just a heads up. Import can be done but between airline travel and government red tape it's not worth the trouble in my opinion.

I would try some dedicated hunting forums Oleson because folks are on those that's because their main interest is hunting as opposed to a hunting sub-forum on a gun forum where relatively few of the members hunt. What you may get is someone in Illinois/Iowa/Wisconsin or other Midwestern state with some great deer ground that would let your dad and you take some "management" deer in return for the use of your farm. Otherwise, I'd check out some Hunting ranches for big game and shooting preserves for upland game like pheasants. Many give a challenging hunt while also giving the promise of seeing/taking multiple animals. I regularly train my bird dogs at a local game farm on released pheasants and between the excellent cover and the type of birds released, it's just as challenging as any wild hunt, other than you know there are birds on the field, how many is up to you. Sometimes the cost at these places is not that much more than what it would cost for an out of state/country hunter to buy a license, if there are licenses available over the counter. I can shoot 25 pheasants in a weekend 10 miles from my house for less monies than going the 800 mi to South Dakota and shooting 6. Plus these places offer seasons that run longer than general hunting seasons so one can come and hunt when they want, not when they have to. Seems the cost to hunt would be minor as compared to the cost of getting here and room/board/travel while you are here.

If I had the resources and access to lots of land, I would offer one of my tags in a heartbeat. I hope this works out for you and your dad!

You may enjoy a Prong Horn Antelope Hunt. There are many guest ranches that provide lodging, meals and guides. The Spear Head is located in some good desert hunting areas. :)By the time you rent a 4X4 lodging etc. The prices are not that bad. They will cape and hang your game as well.

Thanks for the tips and support. The reason I chose this forum is that I like the community, plain and simple. I've tried out different US fora, and I always end up back here. And it's more about the father-son trip and meeting new people than the number of dead animals and the fanciness of the lodge.
