I'm interested in getting some gun training in NoVa. I'm a decent shot and know how to handle firearms safely. I'm looking for something a bit more advance, but still "entry level".

I'm interested in courses that would help me use my CCW effectively in a variety of situations (personal defense, defense of companions, moving while shooting, changing positions, transitioning from concealed to "ready to fight", etc). I can travel if necessary, but I don't want to go very far. Blackhawk is about 4-5 hours from here. That's doable, but I'd prefer something closer.

I'd also prefer classes that were a single weekend or even "mini-classes" that only took a day. I don't have time to take a week off for a class.

I checked the NRA's website, but they don't seem to offer anything past basic safety classes. They don't even have descriptions of those classes.

Hey Chris,
There's also Storm Mountain Training Center in New Creek, WV. That's about a 2.5 hour drive from Fairfax. I made it to Keyser, WV (just north of New Creek) in a little over 2 hours.

I haven't been to the NRA range in a while, but the bulletin boards near the classroom used to have listing of local classes, not just at the NRA range.

Try calling or visiting the NRA Range, Blue Ridge Arsenal, and Shooter's Paradise to see what classes they have coming up.

I can also recommend Storm Mountain - sounds like you're ready for Handgun II.

Thanks for the info guys!

I've been making a list of potential classes and sources. Your posts have been very helpful. I found a class at the Quantico Shooting club that's exactly what I'm looking for, both in price, duration, and subject matter. I'm still taking suggestions though, so keep them coming...

I never thought to check with some of the shops in the area. I did look at the NRA's website, but the only info they have is about their most basic classes. I did see a flyer for a more advanced class when I was there on Monday.

I'd like to get at least one class in this year, maybe 2-3 if money and time allows.

Hey Chris,
Since I live just across I-66 from the NRA Range, I'll try to stop by this weekend to see if there are any flyers or announcements on the bulletin board about local classes. I'll post anything here that I find.

I stopped by the NRA Range today. Most of the classes listed were beginner classes and such for those getting a CCW permit. There was one class worth looking at:

Intermediate Pistol Class
March 6-8, 2005
7:00 pm - 10:30 pm
600 rounds
$150

The IDPA matches the NRA runs is also worthwhile to check out.
