I do a lot of practicing with various weapons and I mostly do it for fun.

BUT when I practice with my carry gun I do it for serious (though it's fun too). Here's the deal - all targets are stationary and if (GOD forbid) the real deal ever happens the BG ain't gonna just stand there and say "go ahead - I'll stand still - real still and let ya shoot me" (at least I don't think they will - but then criminals aren't always the sharpest tacks in the box so who knows).

Anyway what type of drills can one set up to practice shooting at a moving target (can't be done on a range). I shoot out on my daughter's land - 10 acres of practical wilderness with a small 75 yd range set up by me and my son in law. Plenty of trees around, sloping terrain, a log about 4' in diameter and 7' or 8' feet long. A forest borders north, south and west with west/east being a forbidden shooting direction.

Suggestions to simulate a moving/dodging target moving towards you?

Hitting a moving target with a pistol is going to be hard to begin with but shooting trap and skeet will help. Some have said that the average distance that most SD shootings are less than 25 feet away so hitting a man sized target will not be impossible with the trap and skeet experience under your belt.

Tie a helium-filled balloon to a RC vehicle with about 4-5 feet of string. Have a friend move the vehicle somewhat erratically about 10 feet away. The balloon will approximate COM on a moving target.

The problem with this is if it's windy, the balloon blows down too close to the ground.

Have a partner pull a target mounted on a radio flyer wagon -or similiar lowslung wheeled device.

I'm assuming that you are moving as well, nothing wrong with moving away from danger.

I built a charging target on an old lawn mower deck. Mounted a scare crow like mannikin on it with a ballon filling out the old shirt that covers the chest. You hit the ballon (kill zone) and the fake BG slumps down.

Set it up on a rope and pully arrangement so your buddy can pull it towards you and stay out of the line of fire. If you set the range up right (make sure you check safety fans carefully) you can practice moving out of the line of attack while drawing and firing.
