darts are much safer to use on people than bullets.Dart guns can incapacitate no matter where they hit,and they're just as accurate as a gun at the range the most self defense situations involve. It seems like a good idea if you want to defend yourself without the stigma generally placed on private citizens with "killing machines".

Negative to that!

1) The effect is not immediate.
2) If you screw up on the dose, (too little) the guy whacks you.
3) If you screw up on the dose (too much) the guy dies.
4) If you don't want to screw up on the dose, you must weigh the guy and ask him if he has any confounding medical ailments that must be factored in (in other words, he whacks you).

Here is some info of note:

Tranquilizer injections are based on, among other things, the body weight of the individual. Too heavy of a dose can be fatal. Some people are allergic to some medications and can die from them. Your non-lethal option just became lethal and you are now in the position of defending your use of a lethal weapon when you only intended to use non-lethal means.

as nice as a dart gun sounds, pepper spray and a pistol are about the best defense for most situation you are likely to encounter as a citizen. Trying to get too fancy can get you killed. If you are in a situation where your life is in danger to the point that incapacitating force is needed a bullet is about the most effective and reliable method of stopping an attacker within the means of most people, untill phazers can be had cheap that is the best we got

You make it sound so complicated.:) All you have to do is take a quick medical history and then have the bad guy step on a scale so you calculate the right dosage.

First you got to throw a big net over 'em. When they get all tangled up go ahead and dart 'em. Make sure you put a radio tracking collar on 'em so you can keep track of their migration patterns.

All good answers, and all quite correct. Let me toss in my measly $0.02 worth. Tranq guns are single shots usually. What if you miss? What if you hit the wallet he just lifted and hid inside his jacket, and it injects the wallet instead? Whatever you carry needs to be effective quickly and capable of a repeat shot in case the first one doesn't solve the problem for whatever reason.

When you can come up with a drug that can be subcutaneously injected and works instantly on everyone and is lethal to no one, PM me and I'll reopen this thread. In the meantime this is so unreal a concept that it's not on topic here.
