Hi, I came a cross an electronic version of what a appeared to be exerpts from a book (cannot figure out who the author was) "Combat shooting with a pistol. Israeli style"

There are paragraphs were the author just documents his opinions of the combat pistols from various makers.

The translation is somewhat lousy, but readeable:

--------------------

Sig - Very high quality complex and expensive weapon. Excellent double action trigger, very good balance, light-weight for a steel construction.
Flat form helps concealed carry. Easy to learn for beginners. However, this is a fragile weapon - cannot handle well blows and various mechanical hits. used by special forces in Israel

FN HP - Considered one of the best 9mm single action service weapons. Manufactured under many different names and is used by many countries from 1935. Used by special forces in Great Britain and many other countries. Used by Israeli police force, however slowly is being displaced. Not very convenient for a modern shooter with normal size hands. Expensive pistol, for normal functioning requires very high quality manufacturing process. In recent times technology of the manufacturing was simplified, that definitely showed in the quality of the pistol

1911A (Colt .45) Was the main service pistol in the USA since 1911 till 1985. Excellent service weapon. Served as the bassis for many copies and modified copies. As shortcomings, tendency for some small parts to brake off, and the heavy weight of the pistol.
S&W large family of double action pistols, manufactured since 1955. Early models are very good. Change to double stack magazines and modern technology of manufacturing noticeably worstened the pistol as a service weapon. Uses safety on the slide of the pistol with all the cons of that approach. New pistol "Sigma" is loosely a copy of Glock but has worse trigger. Another characteristic of this pistol is very good geometry.

"Beretta" Pistols of this name typically associated with lots of hype. First 9mm Beretta of the modern manufacturing type showed up in 1951 as a copy of Walther. In 1985 modification of double action with double stack magazine was accepted as a service weapon by USA Military. Prolonged use showed many shortcomings of this pistol. Information showed up about cracks and some times complete disintegration of the slide. Situated on the slide, safety often was a reason of the delays in cycling (?). In general, this is big, not very comfortable pistol that is not very popular in places where it is used as a service pistol. New pistol Beretta Cougar as well cannot be recommended as a comfortable weapon.

"Para Ordinance" - Family of excellent .45 pistols of Canadian manufacturing. Developed from the basis of 1911A1, but have original ideas such as Ramp is together with the barrel, that noticeably increases dependability. Despite the use of a large caliber and double-stack magazines these pistols are remarkably comfortable.

"CZ" - Quality and reliable weapons from Czech republic. Despite minor problems, models CZ 75 and 83 can be easily recommended as a service weapon (also CZ 83 is the only pistol in .380 caliber that deserves a mention for that caliber). Newest model CZ 100 obviously is a failure.

"Walther" 9mm si from the famous in the past company, today not widely used partially because of the high price. This is a high quality and dependable weapon. New Walther P99 has an original idea for the trigger and adjustable handle, which is very convenient.

"H&K" German company with a tendency for exotic designs. Manufactures pistols of special design. It is single action, however lowering of the hammer is done by a separate mechanism located in the front of the handle -- that causes delays in the case of light-holding of the pistol. Trigger pull is rather long and hard. There are versions with double and single stack magazines. Used a design where gases leave via barrel. That causes a problem that the weapon gets very hot after two or three magazines of use. This pistol is characterized by excellent balance/geometry (with single stack magazines) and is rather dependable (and very high price). Used by some police units in Germany. Pistol of a typical design is used by USA Marines, it is a very large double action pistol in the .45 double stack magazines.

"Star" It is advised to pay very special attention at the early models of this Spanish company, those models where deep modifications of 1911A1. This pistol of single action with single stack magazine in .45 and 9mm - is a true miracle of the weapon design. In my view this is the best pistol in the last 100 years of development of this type of weapon. It is not unusual, that it is Star 9mm BS model that has the absolute record of military use (remember SouthAfrican Lauren van Wooren and 11 Cuban special operation personnel). Variants with smaller barrel is practically an ideal service pistol. The modern models of double action with double-stack magazine certainly is inferior to its American and German competitors.

Bull - Modern Israeli pistol in .45. It is a modification of 1911 with double stack magazine and plastic frame. Not very good geometry. In general is very inferior to the pistol with the same idea: Para Ordinance

Jerico - Modern Israeli 9mm , based on CZ 75. Has excellent balance/geometry even with the hi-cap double stack magazines. There are many variants of this weapon, that have various types of trigger mechanism, barrell length, length of the handle, etc. It is the most used service weapon in Israel. In military and police units they used Jerico of full size, single action. Single notable problem is not a very good balance and inconvenient grooving on the slide for quick reloads. Australia ordered a special modification of this pistol with additional enhancements of the trigger mechanism and shorten barrel. At the present time it is the best example lf the current variants. Actually, the same modification is offered for commercial market.
