All,
I went ahead and purchased a CZ720 therefore by default I became the guinea pig for the THR concerning this new autoloader. I have had the gun about a month, and just had the opportunity to take it out and stretch it's legs a little bit. I also was able to take a friend along, he has only shot small caliber rifles once or twice, never a shotgun and has owned a KMART Remington 870 Viking for 5 years without ever using it. This was going to be fun ....

Anyway, the 720 is CZs 20g version of the Huglu produced copy of the Beretta 1200 line. There is also the 12g model 712 in the CZ line. The gun has some nice wood on it, with some above average checkering in the right places. The blue is nice and dark, but I dont know what to call it, but it is not a smooth finish but sort of like a powder coat rougher finish. The gun breaks down easy and I was able to loosen it up with some oil strategic places. As this gun uses a recoil system to move the action, I used some Fiochi Golden Pheasants with 2 7/8 drams moving shot about 1245fps. I also brought along some Winchester Super X,which is a lighter shooting then the fiochi, a) because I have a bunch and b) I wanted to see if it would work after a little while of shooting the fiochi.

Well, the gun functioned fine with the fiochi. It would eject perfectly and would feed the next shell. The Winchester would FTE 2 out of 25 rounds, not feed 10 out of 25, but in general the Super X shot as well as the fiochi golden pheasant.

I did not shot this gun well right off the bat. I am a decent trap shooter and have a few perfect rounds to my credit with a simpson 16g sxs, I could always shoot a 21 or 22 with a Benelli Nova 20g. I was disappointed with my 13, 17, 19 and 19 rounds. But, I will not give up. I am going to go get some target loads, something in the 1300fps range and work at smoothing out my swing. This gun is really light and quick. I think I was overswinging a few times and probably dropped my score a few hits per round. It is not a great Trap gun, it will probably be a good Skeet and SC gun. I am going to give that a shot sometime soon.

In addition, it was a good torture test because it poured buckets of rain on us the entire time. I left the gun on the rack most of the time, I didn't cover the breach and I did not experience any FTF, FTE with powerful ammo.

All in all, it is a good gun, I need to get used to. As it is my first semi, I think it is a perfect example to learn on .. and for $329 a downright bargain if not a steal. I will let you all know how it holds up.

BTW, my friend shot a 20, 21, 20, 21 his first time out. He is hooked ....hahahahahhahhahhahhhahahahahha (maniacal laughter)

Thanks for posting this. And thanks for getting your friend started.

You need to pattern that thing. Get it shooting where you're looking and those scores will come up.

you are right

I do need to pattern it with some different loads. I am going to do that next weekend. I have this thought that you should get at least 200 shells through a barrel before it is "broken in". Then it is ok to pattern it. I patterned a new Ithaca 37 a few years ago the day I bought it, and about and sometime later I noticed it was not shooting the same. I repatterned the gun and the pattern had shifted to a lower POI then the higher POI I noticed on the first patterns. I cant explain it, but I now feel as if are barrel needs to be seasoned.

Has anyone else ever seen a barrel change pattern after shooting a bit?

I've a barrel here that has shifted POI, but it took a few thousand rounds.

More likely for you, something's not quite snugged up and your barrel is moving a bit.

Repeaters, even 870s, are prone to this. Make sure the mag cap is tight.

Different loads will also vary POI, so will changes in form. Most of the time these are inconsequential.
