picked up the 50-70 trapdoor today, its a cut down sporter, barrel is 23 1/2''. side plate is 1863 and the trapdoor has 1870, i thin this is a 1868? bore is mint, the rifle came with home made stock to, i just put the cut down back on. the rear sight is missing the elevator and the front is just some weird sight sweatted on, i see under the rear sight there is a dovetail i that normal. i have to as the guy i got if from if he has the screws for the side plate overall it's not bad, i think just some work on the sights it will be a fun gun.

with the trade i got lyman 50/70 3 die set 50 new star line brass, about 20 old loaded rounds there bell brass. and $50. i just need to pickup a bullet mold and this should be a fun range toy and deer rifle.thanks any info is helpful.

Congratulations, I really enjoy the 50/70. I have a converted 1866. Much better hunting rifle than the 45/70.

A M1868 will have the serial number on the breech end of the barrel and the barrel end of the receiver, nearly touching each other, so yours is not a 68. I believe yours is an M1870.

Here is a good source of information,

this has the serial numbers.

I see that now and stand corrected.

There are a variety of molds available including some hollow based one. Get what you like, some black powder, lube and have some fun.

ya mostliky get a lee mould, i will do a chamber cast and see what i need. i should buy some pure lead or even 1-20 most what i got is to hard.

Lee makes the traditional 450 grain bullet. Not sure what diameter they are dropping at currently. For a while, they dropped undersized. Enough so your could single wrap them. Hopefully, they have corrected that.

Night Owl Enterprise is a bit more money but gives a good product for that money.

Or look on the cast boolit forum and you might be able to buy some bullets from known molds before you purchase the mold.

Good luck!
