I will be heading back to Arizona next friday the 25th, and staying through March 6th. I will be bringing some pistols with me. As far as I understand the concealed carry law, and according to AZ Law enforcement, the no permit carry law applies to both residents and non residents. I will be bringing my MI CPL for added reference.

But as far as No-No's on where to carry. I would assume the same main principals, and I'm guessing the Indian Reservations will have their own laws. What about state parks such as the grand canyon? I am taking some friends through the state.

I know AZ very well, but this will be my first time carrying there, so I am unfamiliar with the regulations.

Any insight would be great!!

Thanks in advance!

Dont Go??
Well all I can say is that would be your loss.
I love Arizona.

Don't Go!

That's helpful.

You are on the right track...no license/permit is required by non-residents to carry open or concealed.

There are certain areas you cannot carry concealed (restaurants that serve alcohol) and you'll want to watch for signs that specifically say no firearms allowed at businesses, etc.

You can carry open or concealed at state/national parks but might have less "issues" doing it concealed.

Here's some good information for you: http://www.arizonashooting.com/v3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=118937

Enjoy and have fun.

Ok, is there stipulations on restaurants that serve alcohol? Almost every place on the planet at least offers beer. (not talking family or fast food joints). But in michigan, the primary source of income must be alcohol by the glass for concealed carry to be prohibited, otherwise, even though they serve alcohol you can still carry.

You can carry concealed, even if the restaurant serves alcohol, but you CANNOT drink. As far as if your CCL would be accepted here in AZ, I have no idea. I would make some phone calls to get a definitive answer that and maybe even talk to more than one person to make sure you get the correct, lawful answer.

Yes and NO if it serves alcohol you cant carry without a permit

Now before we passed the new concealed carry law (no permit requred) AZ also passed a CCW law that alows permit holders to carry into a bar or restaurants as long as you don't drink alcohol You still need a CCW permit to carry into bars the constitutional carry laws dont let you carry in bars or restaurants

From link:Arizona Recognizes all other states valid permits.

Enjoy your time here I love Arizona

Excellent info, I will definitely have my CPL in my possession so thats great to know where the state draws the line.

AZ is my second home, and hopefully soon to be my primary in a few months...

We have some ambiguous rules because the new law has not integrated with the old laws. The recent constitutional carry law allowed everyone to carry. But a slightly older law was passed to allow CCW owners to eat in restaurants that served alcohol if they did not drink. That law still only applies to CCW owners because of the way it is worded. If you have a CCW from any state you have effectively a CCW here from the constitutional carry law. I'd look up our laws.

you could also search "AZ reciprocity" and get this, for extra info=
az reciprocity etc

>>Arizona recognizes all other states valid permits:

This state and any political subdivision of this state shall recognize a concealed weapon, firearm or handgun permit or license that is issued by another state or a political subdivision of another state if both:

1. The permit or license is recognized as valid in the issuing state.

2. The permit or license holder is all of the following:

(a) Not a resident of this state.

(b) Legally present in this state.

(c) Not legally prohibited from possessing a firearm in this state.

For the purpose of establishing mutual permit or license recognition with other states, the department of public safety shall enter into a written agreement if another state requires a written agreement.

Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, a person with a concealed weapons permit from another state may not carry a concealed weapon in this state if the person is under twenty-one years of age or is under indictment for, or has been convicted of, a felony offense in any jurisdiction, even if the person's rights have been restored and the conviction is expunged, set-aside or vacated.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you don't have to know EVERYTHING that goes with carrying in that, It's legal, but you have to know the law, and make sure you stay LEGAL.

High 70's and sunny today-In Phx. Definately shorts and T shirt weather during the day. Night's cool off, but being from Mich, you'll be fine. Higher elevations still considerbly colder, still lots of snow. Enjoy your vacation here.

Obviously. That's why he made this thread in the first place...

Don't Go!

??? to the mecca of our firearms nation?
AZ is one of... if not THE #1 gun friendliest states in the U.S.A. why on earth would anyone want to avoid AZ?

unless your jealous like me and say dont go unless you take me with you lol

Yeah, it's hot there. Don't wear a coat, a sweater, or anything you might be used to wearing right now in Michigan.
I am very aware of the temperature in Arizona lol... I travel there at least 5 times a year, we boat on Lake Havasu for Desert Storm in the end of April, and have a place down by Tombstone that we make it to a few times a year, like this trip...

I am very very very familiar with the state.. Just not with firearms laws because I don't live there. This will be my first time carrying in the state, and just wanted to know if there were any special do nots. Like the Indian reservations for example, or Grand Canyon state park. etc.... things I dont have to worry about in MI because I know the laws here!

But thanks for the insight...

The Grand Canyon is a National Park (not a State Park). Start here for info.

You dont need a permit to carry concealed. HOWEVER, you need a CWP to carry concealed in place that serves alcohol. That is one of the 'perks" of having a CWP in AZ.

Schools, Govt building etc are the normal do not carry places. Watch for signs ON THE DOOR or next to the business license or in a conspicous place. AZ has strict laws regarding the placement of signs and what they look like. They cant hide them... they cant draw on a napkin.

Regarding state parks and such, many of our state parks and national forests are at least partially on Indian reservations. You have to be careful to not wander over that boundary while carrying. Other than that, Arizona is about as free as it gets.

You can carry concealed, even if the restaurant serves alcohol.....

I just want to point out that this is true only if you have a CWP in AZ.

If you dont have a CWP, you can not go into a restauraunt that serves alcohol.
If you DO have a CWP, you can go in but still cant drink alcohol.

If its posted correctly, it doesnt matter if you have a CWP or not.

Now, they dont just come and arrest you.... only if you dont leave when asked.

I've been reordering the "Traveler's Guide to the Fire Arm laws of the Fifty States". It's renewed each year and is excellent to gift or to own.

www.gunlawguide.com

reads like the yellow pages for each state.

HANDY!

Given that Arizona is a very sunny state you should use a good sun block to prevent sunburn. Then most importantly make sure you get it off your hands before handling your carry piece. You wouldn't want it to slip out of you hand at the wrong time, correct?

Take Care
JJ

Actually iirc you can carry in a school, I'm almost 100% sure that was covered in class.

Yeah....not so much.

No carry in schools. In fact, Tucson is making a big tadoo over carrying within a thousand feet of a school. The thousand feet is generally defined as the fence line. Sucks. That's Tucson for you.

You CAN have your weapon on your person IN A CAR on school grounds for the purpose of picking up or dropping off your child. If you go into the school...gun gets secured in the vehicle.
