traveling to CA.... ok to bring guns?

I'm taking a road trip to CA this weekend from NV and was wondering if I could bring my guns and go plinking with my family while I'm out there..... I checked out packing.org but I'm still not sure.... The guns are registered in NV but I do not have a CCW. If you guys have any info on this I'd appreciate it! thanks ahead of time

From what I have learned, traveling to Californica is like visiting another country, a really, really weird country. We're talking Alice-through-the looking-glass weird. Don't do it!!!

Sure you can bring them.

Here are the (short form) rules:

No California 'assault weapons'. You can bring long guns -centerfire, semi auto, removable magazine, WITHOUT pistol grip or thumbhole stock and WITHOUT 'flash hider' ('muzzle brake' is OK). So, for example, M1A is OK but any of the M4/M16 clones are not OK.

Handguns with threaded barrels are CA aw's. .50 cal BMG are CA aw's.

No magazines with a capacity > 10 rounds.

Handguns must travel unloaded, in a locked case.

CA does not honor ANY out of state CCW, so you not having one is OK.

I seriously wish I could move out of state, but my job and ex-wife/daughter keep me in the PRK for now.

Depends on WHICH guns you want to bring. Many of them, you can just bring with you. Don't carry them loaded.

For what it's worth, the last time I flew into CA with an M1A, I made a point of printing out the relative portions of the CA code and sticking them in the case with the rifle. Better safe than sorry if someone gets all fussy and you have to open the case.

That said, they're more likely to ask you about illegal fruit at the border than weapons.

I haven't driven to CA since the early 80's. Are there REALLY border checks going into the state, or is that just a bit of hyperbole to make a point?

Some parts of the year, most local states have big signs about fruit, and during major fruit fly infestations, there might be agriculture types asking about fruit in some areas. That can be true county-to-county, too, out here in the Southwest.

Make sure your mags are unloaded as well. I bought all my guns in CA before I moved to NV, so I'm pretty sure they are still legal. And I am heading back into occupied territory tomorrow.

I've never seen a border check in the dozen or so times I crossed the border in the last three years. Your NV plates could attract attention as an easy revenue generating ticket complete with vehicle search. Watch your speed and know where you are going. Driving slowly and being lost could translate to: suspicious behavior and become PC.

I've always been stopped at the agricultural check points, but all they want to know about is fruit/vegatables.

I would be more concerned about the hi-cap mags, since the DOJ has a fear of people importing mags > 10.

You brought a M1A to CA? Did yours have the CA-Legal muzzle brake or the standard flash hider? A M1A with the standard flash hider is considered an Assault Weapon. FYI, just in case you come back one day.
