Many physicists disagree... read the paper "Large Rotating Cylinders and the Possibility of Global Causality Violation", I think by Tipler.

As far as guns go, if you're taking something into the past you'll be constrained by ammunition bulk. Not many gunshops on the Appian Way.

1st choice: I'd take a Barrett 50 and go back for a T-Rex hunting trip.

2nd choice: Get a job with Buffalo Bills wild west show as a trick shooter...

3rd choice: Get a job working with John Moses Browning in his shop...

Guns or no guns, I'd want to warn Archduke Ferdinand about the plot to kill him in Sarajevo (1914).
Preventing the first world war might have spared us naziism and communism too. Lenin probably wouldn't have been able to seize power in Russia during peacetime.
Even so, after dealing with Gavrilo Princip, the Black Hand and the Archduke, I'd try to seek out the not-yet-famous Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and Mao and terminate them, just to make sure.
I probably still wouldn't look as cool as Arnie in his shades and leather jacket. Or as sexy as Kristen Lokken from T3.

If I get arrested, I'll just say I'm a time traveller from the twenty-first century. They'll know I'm crazy! :D

The other one where I'd know for sure what to do: John Wilkes Booth.
I think there was a Twilight Zone episode about that, where Robert Redford tries to warn Lincoln at the Ford Theater but gets carried off as a nut case. Good thing I would be armed, huh?

Vic -- why not just warn Custer that there was a superior force ahead? You could also remind him that Grant was already mad at him (for disobedience in similar circumstances).

Dillitante, if you did that we would be 40 years behind in technological advances, and socially as well I think. If blacks hadnt fought in the wars too, they would have less ammo to use in their fight for equality.

[age old question]
Who is to say that once your "known" despots are out of the way, new and more horrible ones wouldnt crop up in their place?
[/age old question]

Like I said earlier, "I hate Temperal Mechanics." Courtesy of one Cheif Miles O'Brien.

Moparmike,
have you heard of Maksutov telescopes?
I just heard about them recently. It's an improved design that reduces some kinds of aberration and makes the telescope shorter.
It's the principle behind these nifty gadgets too:

Even more recently I read about some of Maksutov's other ideas. In the 1930s he designed systems like the endoscopes and other micro-viewers that people use now.

Some of these devices apparently worked, but they didn't take off partly because Soviet medicine sucked.

Thanks to Vlad and Joe (and Adolf) a lot of mid-1900s inventions didn't happen until later.

Then shouldn't you shoot yourself in the head right now? Something might happen tomorrow that would be so bad that you'd wish you had shot yourself today.

Why shouldnt I shoot myself?

Because it would hurt and God only knows where it would ricochet off to. Might hurt someone.:neener:

To heck with behind your target, always know what is in the path of the angles your bullet might bounce off in!

No, I hadnt heard of him. Good to know that good ideas can crop up and become dust collectors as well in the past as now ::cough::NASA::cough::. Nothing says government efficency as well as the recognition of good ideas... (I know, good ideas is a completely subjective matter...)

Going back to meet folks wouldn't be bad. A Super 8 camera and interviews with historical figures or even watch the Pyramid being built. Find out if the tale told to Solon by the Egyptians about the Athenians defeating the Atlanteans is true (it's in Herodotus - the same guy who told us about Leonidas). Weapon of choice? FN-FAL w/detachable night sites and a Glock 20 (plenty of 15 round magazines).

Of course, time travel is impossible and that's a good thing.

Nope, sorry....

The Vulcan High Command has concluded that time travel is not possible.

:D

If you traveled forward in time and returned to the present, would it be possible to get home before you left? Questions like this are why I gave up mind altering substances in 1974.

Probably because I learned Texas History in an elementary school in Texas by a Texan who loved Texas' history more than any other subject...

I would take a crate of AKs and a few crates of ammo, and save Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie and WB Travis at the Alamo.

Then maybe Houston would be called Travis.
