Tricks/advice for removing rust on OLD gun?

A quick background on this. Years ago when I was a kid a neighbor gave us his old air rifle. I have no idea what brand it is since everything but "made in china" is in chinese. Anyway since bordom has set in I decided to try to clean it up. It's got some pitting and a good bit of rust. I just finished scrubbing the metal down. Got the stock cleaned up real nice and all that but can't get the metal looking real real good. I don't want to go spend money and have it refinished because odds are it'll almost never even be shot.

Any ideas on a way to do this? Pretty much just for looks.

You can use a battery charger and a container of water. You will need another piece of steel that will be sacrificed in the process. Connect the negative cable to the part and the positive to the sacrificial piece. Immerse in water and turn on battery charger at its lowset amp setting. Let set over night. The rust will be turned to soft, black goo that can be cleaned off with a stiff brush. No chemicals are necessary and the waste water is even good for your lawn. This process will not remove any good bluing left on the piece and it will get the rust out of the deepest pits.

That's an interesting solution. Can that hurt the battery charger?

Hasn't hurt mine and I used it several times on various parts, old blades, bike chains and such.

hm.. so everything goes in the water?

I think I'll have to give that a try, just wondering if it will hurt the seals in the thing.

I would recommend you completly disasemble the rifle first. It won't hurt the seals, but any part that the water can't reach will not be cleaned.

You can also hang the parts and the anode from wires and connect the charger cables to the wires.
