I see folks talking about a 9lb trigger on this or a 2lb trigger on that. How are these numbers measured?

Is this contraption something that many shooters own or only the hardcore types?

A while ago I improvised a trigger-pull gauge. (Some patience, please)

It used a coat hanger, a nylon stuff bag w/ drawstring and a few 1 lb cans of beans.

First verify that the gun is unloaded. Check the chamber again with your finger. This involves pointing the gun vertically, so you don't want a hole in your roof...

You fashion an S-hook from the coat hanger, sizing it so it fits thru the trigger guard and does not scratch the gun when the gun is held vertically.

Cock the gun and hang the stuff bag from the S-hook. It helps if the drawstring is longer than the LOP, so the gun doesn't touch the bag.

Add a few cans of beans to the stuff bag and try to lift the bag off the floor using the gun. If the trigger pulls, the pull weight is less than or equal to the number of cans of beans.

Remove cans until the trigger does not pull. Trigger pull is greater than this number.

After doing this, you will probably buy a trigger pull gauge like I did. Or decide that trigger pull isn't all that important. :)

dmazur I love it!

I can hear the argument in the range house already:

Aww c'mon, I have a 3 can Chunky Soup pull

That's nothin'! I have a 1 and a half Spaghettio pull!

You young bucks got it ALL handed to you! Why, back in my day, we had a 12 green bean pull...AND WE LIKED IT!

Same sort of set-up as above.

Use a decent cord, something that won't stretch.

Add water to a container until the trigger releases. Weigh the container, string.

There's a good chance a decent scale is going to cost you more than a trigger pull gauge. I had a bench-rest Rem. 700 PSS with a Timney where the pull was set down to about 3.5 oz.

Has anyone ever used a digital fish scale to measure pull? Ive thought about trying that, but haven't got around to it. Any thoughts?

In my experience digital fish scales don't update very quickly and don't hold the peak reading either.

They'll work, but you'll have to sneak up on the trigger break very slowly and watch carefully what the reading is at that instant.
