I am looking at an optic for AR that is more compatible with my worsening astigmatism. Red dots have stopped being a discrete dot and are now more of a star shaped blob. I was looking through the Trijicon Reflex (dual illumination fiberoptics and tritium), and the dot is much clearer for me which I like a lot.

The illumination is where I have a concern. In bright light, the fiberoptics work great. However, if I am in a darker location and trying to sight in on something down range in bright light, I tend to lose the green dot. It fades into the brightness of the distant target.

Also, when I go into a dark room where the fiberoptics don't pick up light and I rely on the tritium, I can only faintly see the tritium, and cant really see it at all until my eyes adjust to low light.

Are these things to be expected with this device?

That's the downside to the projected reticle optics.

I'm assuming that you have talked to an eye doc about correcting the real problem, your astigmatism? Even if you don't notice it driving and reading, the astigmatism is still there and makes seeing anything harder.

Doctor says I need to wait at least a year. I had a torn retina about 3 months ago.

Ahh. I've got daily bad astigmatism and the best solution I've found for me is to use contact lenses for shooting.

I have bad astigmatism too. Tritium and my eyes don't very well together though I don't know if the astigmatism is causal.

I had one of those sights on a Tavor I used to own and it worked OK at the range but as you noted, it does not work well when you're in a dark environment aiming at a brighter one. The tritium is intended to be used only in low-light situations, not to overcome the dark-into-light problem. I've found that a slightly larger dot helps with my astigmatism, and for some reason some manufacturers work better for me. Aimpoints are the worst (although I still have a Micro on my FN P90) but I've had better dot resolution with Trijicon RMRs and MROs and the Meprolight M5.

The Meprolight M21 has large light collection area on the front of the optic and is much less prone to washout than the Trijicon Reflex sights I've owned.

With the astigmatism problem I have better results with the solid reticle M21 and Trijicon Reflex than the Aimpoints or EOTechs.
