Does anyone make a tritium sight for the M1? I am looking for a good way to make the M1 more functional in low light conditions without losing the use of iron sights as a backup.
M14/M1A front sight is different from M1. It is the rear sight that is the same and the elevation knob has different calibrations due to slightly different ballistics.
Well, yeah, if all you're talking about is the portion whose top you center in the rear aperature when aiming. However, that blade is integral with the REST of the piece, with wings, dovetail on the bottom, and screw hole.
All the rest of the stuff is different. Even the total sight picture is a little different, 'cause the M1 protective wings are larger and farther apart than the M14-type.
WE COULD PROBABLY INSTALL TRITIUM INTO A SET OF SIGHTS OR MANUFACTURE A SET THAT WOULD ACCEPT TRITIUM FOR YOUR M1. WE WOULD HAVE TO GATHER SOME DIMENSIONS AND DECIDE WHAT WOULD BE BEST. UNFORTUNATELY AT THIS TIME WE ARE BACKED UP PRETTY GOOD AND YOU WOULD HAVE A DECENT WAIT WITH WHAT WE HAVE IN THE SHOP RIGHT NOW. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND WE CAN DISCUSS THIS FURTHER. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE LET US KNOW. EMAIL US ANYTIME OR CALL US AT 248-628-1811.
Frohickey--hope we weren't too hard on you. I thought it good to let you know that there was at least a sliver of similarity. Compared to the M1, the '14 type is kinda cute.
Anyway, I'm not sure that there would be enough material in a standard FS blade to hold a tritium vial. NO WAY could you put one inside a NM-width blade.
Me, I've toyed with the idea of putting the tritium offset inside the left "ear" of the FS unit, and having the rear tritium on the rear sight base so your windage would be generally correct...but that's too much work. This week, at least...
I really like the straight 8s configuration better than the 30-dot.
XS sights already makes one for the M14/M1A and I was told that they wouldn't work on a Garand. Also, the SOCOM has a trit sight and most say it is sgnificantly larger than a standard blade.
I painted the circle part of the allen bolt in the back of the front sight with phosperous paint. Not ideal or very precise, but better than nothing. Just have to hold low.
