Troops 'told of March 17 invasion'

06mar03

BRITISH troops had been told an invasion of Iraq would begin on March 17, with a huge bombing campaign being launched four days earlier, the Daily Express in London has reported.

The tabloid quoted a senior government source, who it reported had direct access to British military planning in Kuwait, as saying that "everything is being geared up towards a ground invasion beginning on Monday week".

British newspapers also reported that Britain and the US were considering an amended new United Nations resolution giving Iraq a short time to disarm or face imminent military action.

The Times said that London and Washington were to force a vote on a new resolution early next week, but were studying ways of luring wavering Security Council members into their camp.

One possible solution would be to introduce an ultimatum into the resolution, or a protocol alongside it. The intention would be to give Iraq a few more days to produce chemical and biological weapons, or furnish evidence of their destruction.

The pro-war Sun, Britain's biggest-selling daily, said that US President George W. Bush would give Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein a 72-hour ultimatum to disarm next week after a crucial Security Council vote.

The order to strike would be given even if France vetoed a new resolution that aimed to pave the way to military action, the tabloid added.

Action was expected to begin towards the end of next week, and senior allied commanders had set April 10 as the target date for the end of the war, before temperatures in Iraq soared and the cost of conflict spirals, The Sun said.

In an editorial, the tabloid renewed an attack on French President Jacques Chirac, calling him "Le Worm" for his "spineless" refusal to back the tough US stance on Iraq.

France and Russia on Wednesday dangled the threat of using their veto power on the Security Council to block a new US-British-Spanish resolution.

The Sun claimed Chirac was trying to protect his country's trade deals in the region, and "never meant it when he opposed military action".

France could do a "massive U-turn" if chief UN arms inspector Hans Blix delivered a negative report to the UN on Friday, and Chirac could "emerge with a vestige of respectability", the paper said.

The right-wing Daily Mail tabloid said that Bush would give Saddam a three-day final deadline to disarm next week, whether a new resolution in the Security Council passed, failed or was withdrawn.

The paper said on its front page that British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Bush's staunchest supporter in the Iraq crisis, had been dealt a "double hammer blow" by Blix saying that Iraq's destruction of a number of banned Al-Samoud missiles was "real disarmament", and by the declaration by France and Russia.

So much for OPSEC.

Not you 2dogs, just the press and the people who let this stuff out.

Hopefully its a reverse tactic to make Sadam think thats the date.

Time to fish or cut bait.

The time draweth near.

Expect Russia, France and Germany to really foul things up. Nobody likes losing Billions of dollars. Look for NK and PRC to make their move at the same time. (The optimist in me just thinks that way)

Gonna be interesting next week, thats for sure.

To any of the guys and gals in the armed forces who read this stuff... We're behind you 1000% (At least I am).

Good luck, God speed, Get home safe

Adios

Maybe so, maybe not.

What better way to sucker punch a bad guy than to convince him it will happen in a week or two.

I am skeptical of any dates appearing in the press because Bush has done an outstanding job of playing with heads.

Rumor is that President Bush has requested airtime from the networks next week. A 72-hour ultimatum on Monday would lead to bombing on Thursday, matching the article's timeline.

However, many folks suspect that this is the final head-fake to call Saddam's bluff, or to "encourage" his top military people to defect or stage a coup. I doubt that any of that will happen, and I expect the first attack to happen a few days sooner (or later) than the "leaked" date.

An interesting side note...

My ex just went to Nellis AFB yesterday to watch the Thunderbirds in a warm up show. Several of her co-workers are married to AF personnel and while speculation ran deep, nobody was too worried about immediate deployment.

The fact that The Thunderbirds are still practicing as a team and getting ready for their deployment doing shows makes me wonder about the immediacy of the topic in question.

Oh yeah, I watched the T-birds roll down the Strip (LV Blvd) last week doing a flyby. It STILL makes my heart soar to watch them. (feel like a 12 year old at times)

If you're gonna do it do it well.

Hang on to your hats Iraq. Uncle Sam is about to pay a call. Poor bastiges.

Adios

George Bush; Mr. AT&T himself... Reach out and touch someone ! :D

To the boyz and girlz that is our defenders of freedom; we are behind you, we understand the risks you take for this country, and don't mind the morons like Feinstein, and most of Hollyweird, they wouldn't know reality if it bit them in the butt.

As for Saddam, I wouldn't suggest you buy any green banana's, probably won't have time to enjoy them

As for "Le Worm"... Let me guess, you surrender?

:barf:

All the estimated starting times I've seen for military action has been mid-March, so this has been expected. Yesterday tho was the 1st time I've heard from the UN inspectors that they could be out of Iraq w/in 48 hours.

March 17 deadline proposed
Britain is proposing an amendment to the U.S.-backed U.N. resolution that would set a March 17 deadline for Iraqi compliance with the U.N.'s demand for disarmament. Unless the U.N. decides Iraq has shown "full, unconditional, immediate cooperation" on or before that date, the resolution reads, Iraq "will have failed to take the final opportunity" to disarm.

Not all the important combat elements are in place yet. The 101st Airbourne has just arrived, and a lot of its equipment has yet to arrive.

British units like armor need another four or five days to arrive.

Other newly arrived units have to get their weapons and equipment set-up for desert warfare.

And where is the 4th Infantry Division? Out floating around off the coast of Turkey?

I think the 82nd Airbourne and the 3rd Infantry division have been in Kuwait for quite a while. Same for most off the Marine ground forces.

Also, I think there is another Navy carrier group (the sixth one) that has not arrived yet, but is on the way.

Some special forces are already in Iraq.

I think I got all these deployments right.

Do ya reckon the Abe Lincoln CBG might stick around just long enough to send a "farewell" message? ;) Can make a little better speed on the way home with less weight. :)

"Crickey! It's nearly time we start operations, maaajur. Right, inform the press so that those Iraqi blokes know we're stepping off. Wouldn't be cricket if we didn't. Tea anyone?":uhoh:

With allies like this . . . What am I saying, this was probably written by an American 3 star running for the senate after retirement.:scrutiny:

My new Department Head is onboard the Lincon. The sooner they get back, the sooner he reports aboard here. ;)

Nuke cariers don't care one bit how much weight is in them. They can go just as fast as they want to, as long as they want to.

I hope this isn't really the date. When will the press learn to keep theit yaps shut about important military secrets? We didn't tell Hitler when we planned D-Day so why are we announcing to this Psycho when we are coming?

Keeping the Iraqis on Red Alert endlessly is tremendously wearing on them. An exhausted enemy is a careless enemy.

Maybe Not.....

That may only be if the UN adopts the resolution giving a deadline. France has already stated that they will veto any deadline, as it would imply that if the deadline isn't met it would be OK to go to war. If the resolution fails (and it will) the air war may start as early as next weekend, or we may delay past the March 17th deadline. After all, recent events show we can delay, delay, and delay. :barf:
