I got a new sling for my ar today and I installed the new retention plate sling mount. I had to remove my collapsable butt stock to complete my project. I reassembled everything and it was fine. Took it out and shot it without fail. When I seperated the upper from the lower the recoil buffer shot out from the stock. I found the buffer retention pin and spring and reassembled it closed it up and cycled the bolt. When I opened it up the buffer shot out again. When I reassemble the buffer pin and spring and press the recoil buffer against it, it holds fine. When I remove the sidewards pressure the pin flys out and into my eye. Any help?

It sounds like maybe you unscrewed the buffer tube and didn't move the castle nut at all. So when you put the sling plate between the lower and the castle nut, the buffer tube isn't screwed in as far as it used to be.

Open the gun up and look at the end of your buffer tube near the buffer retention pin--notice that there's a little u-shaped cut-out at the end of the buffer tube? You need to screw the buffer tube into the lower until it retains the buffer retention pin with that little u-shaped cut-out. That's probably going to involve "unscrewing" your castle nut a little so that it gives you a little more slack. That's because your sling plate added thickness between the castle nut and the lower.

I hope that makes sense and is helpful.

Yea the stock needs to be screwed up to the receiver as far as you can to the small upright portion of that retention pin covering up as much of the base of it as possible, then the castle nut needs to be tightened down pretty good so that it doesn't move around.

I know that on the bottom of that rebound spring assembly and associated tube there is a little spring-loaded stud that sticks up holding back the buffer spring steel plunger. It sounds like you somehow either lost that part, or the part is improperly installed.

Others are correct in that the nut does nees to be VERY TIGHT to hold on the stock without it falling off.

That is all I can add to hopefully help you.

this is what you need to verify you still have. the buffer tube holed it in place and is spring loaded. tightening the tube to much however can allow the buffer pin to function improperly and hang up. allowing ur buffer spring and plunger to fly out. Ive assembled over 200 of these a night ;)

Thanks for the help, I got it back to its original condition before I tinkered with it.
