TRP vs TRP Operator: Difference?

Sorry for this insanely stupid question...

All over this site (and others) there's talk of TRP Operators, yet on Springfield's site the TRP and Operator are separate. What am I missing?

Also, do you guys recommend a 1911 (specifically the TRP) as a first gun? I shot the Kimber Custom II recently (along with others) and absolutely loved it. Dead accurate.

I have the TRP in stainless and absolutely love it! Picked mine up at Sportsmans warehouse. Best price I had seen anywhere.

The fit and finish will blow the kimbers out of the water. Not a huge fan of the guide rod but oh well easily fixed. It is my primary carry now. I did find out that mine does not like the wilson mags as for some weird reason it would not lock the slide back.

I use shooting stars from chip mccormick and they work just fine. also the 10rd powermags work flawlessly in them too. I think the gun is set up for 185 or 200 grainers mine shoots a little high with the 230's. Might just be me though. My 185 are dead on.

The TRP comes in armory kote (black bake on finish) or stainless. Regular TRPs come with fixed novak style sights w/ night sights and has a regular barrel/bushing combo.
The TRP railed operator comes only in armory kote (black also). They have adjustable night sights and has a bull barrel (no bushing).
And about $200 difference in pricing.

They have adjustable night sights and has a bull barrel (no bushing).

Is the bull barrel (no bushing) good or bad? Do I want that? lol

Guide rod, there is nothing wrong with it. It is just a personal preference. I like them because they put additional weight at the front of the gun.

Moreover, I like Bull barrels for that same reason, and they area easier to disassemble. No bushing to mess with.

I have a TRP operator and really like it.

I have the Operator with full length dust cover. The rail is an option I do not feel I need, but I have long been a fan of full length dust covers on 1911s. It has a noticeable affect on muzzle rise and thus sight recovery. Of course it does make the pistol heavier and limits your holster choices. Hands down this is my favorite 1911, if not pistol. Were it in 10mm there would be no question, but I do love my 10s. If you get a TRP in any flavor you will love it.

Be aware that you can only buy a TRP Operator with a 3/4 rail now. They no longer make the full railed TRP Operator - although if U dig around long enough online, U may be able to find a used one.

I just put in an order for a Custom full rail Operator in 9mm - but its mucho expensive. It's essentially a full rail version of the Pro I am getting, except I am getting it in matte hard chrome instead of Black T.

I kick myself for not buying a fullrail Operator at my local shop back in 2003. I loved the feel of that gun.

I have a few Wilson mags that have the same problem and have a couple friends who also have the same issue with them. They feed flawlessly...just won't lock that slide back. One of these days I'm going to get around to buying some Wolff magazine springs for them and see if that helps. Until then, the Shooting Stars work great and the Virgil Tripp mags are the best in the world.

Yea, that is the one. I saw someone from Springfield refer to it as a 3/4 rail on an old post - that's why I called it that.

I just bought an MC Operator 2 months ago, and I love it.

On the TRP Operator, I prefer the full rail, however. It's too bad that quit selling that as a normal production gun. They even had a Milspec fullrail operator at 1 time. I never saw one in person, but I have seen numerous pics of them.

THIS photo of a hard chromed TRP Operator was my inspiration to order that hard chromed Custom Shop Operator (I found it online about a week ago)... I do not like the grips he has, but the gun is sweet...

I have had a trp operator with the 3/4 rail since new. I seem to recall that I did replace the hammer and sear because they were mim parts. I mostly shoot my les baer PII at the matches but I had a malfunction and had to use my trp last match. I was surprised at the difference in the way the two guns shot. I really noticed that the trp shot softer and stayed on target easier. I chalk this up to the extra weight of the rail and the full length guide rod. I may start shooting the trp more after discovering this. My only complaint is that Springfield can't seem to make a slide stop to spec. It takes three hands and a screw driver to get the slide stop back in. I have been around the block a couple of time with Springfield service but they cannot seem to fix the problem. I currently have a Wilson slide stop in it and that solved the problem.

Here's a full rail TRP Operator with the only modification being the grips. It is pretty heavy, but a very accurate pistol. I'm not a big fan of rails, but I found this one slightly used at the price of a Loaded model so I couldn't pass it up.
