Who do you shop with? I used to shop cheapest price no matter what, now I am more leary. Knock offs, identity theft, etc. I would shop locally but that means big box stores. Besides I find better prices online. Any trusted obeyers you guys can recommend? I am looking for specifically a VX 1 but am not sure if the vendors online are selling the VX-1 or VX-I as I understand it the VX 1 is a step up... right?

heres an example http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-Leupold-VX-1-3-9x40mm-Rifle-Scope-w-Free-Shipping-/281907094790?hash=item41a2f8e506:g:m3wAAOSwwPhWjH0j

Is this legit???

Seems real. Online sellers usually have less overhead and operate at lower margins, therefor better prices. If it were under $100 I would say redflag it but that price is believable.

With eBay always carefully read the description. There are crooks out there who will sneak in things like, cosmetic damage, used, etc. in the description to protect themselves when they try to pass something as new and you get it and want to return it.

I got my last VX-1 on amazon for $170. I'm a prime member so I had it two days later. Amazon also has an awesome return policy. I would try them, but if you can get a better deal on ebay, go for it. Just be more careful!

Optics Planet has been very good for me.

If you get on their email list they have 10% or more discount codes all the time too.

I've bought many Leuopld scopes on eBay. The only fradulent ones I've seen are the Mark 4 scopes. I doubt the Chinese are going to bother with making a fradulent VX 1. Also, if you buy something on eBay that isn't as advertised, they guarantee you'll get your money back. As for Leupold, they'll honor their lifetime warranty even if you bought the scope used. Just don't buy any "Leupold" scope on eBay that's advertised as a clone, made in China, etc.

I've also bought some stuff from Optics Planet. Believe it or not, at times Cabelas has some very good deals on scopes as well.

I don't buy NIB...I buy nearly new scopes (only a year or so old) off craigslist. And, I only buy Leupold, Nikon or Vortex...they are the only companies (affordable for me) that will honor the lifetime warranty, without a hassle.

Had good luck with opticsplanet, swfa, and midwayusa. Opticsplanet has another division - dvor.com - which often has sales.

lensandlasers.com is a participant on another forum - by all accounts he's a stand-up guy.

Another thing to consider is whether or not the seller is in your state. (Sales tax matters!)

Heads up on swfa. I purchased something a few weeks back thinking it was headed my way. A day or two later I get an e-mail that it was backordered. I had good experiences with them in the past. Would not have been such a big deal other than really needing the parts fast. I ordered the item from euro optics and received it fast. They are my new go-to site for items they carry.

It's worthwhile to check the big box stores too, the best price on the last Leupold I bought was a sale at Gander Mountain.

I almost never consider Cabela's until after checking everywhere else, but a combination of a sale and a coupon code snagged a VX-3 CDS scope for me for a crazy price last fall.

I usually shop Midway, SWFA, Bass Pro, Optics Planet to see who might have a deal. B&H Photo isn't a company you normally think of for hunting stuff but they sell scopes now and are a reputable company with a long history.

That VX-1 is not an expensive scope, so that price seems about right. I haven't bought a scope on Ebay, but have bought lots of other items and have never had a problem.

Current production Leupold scopes from reputable dealers are all priced exactly the same. It is part of the agreement to be allowed to carry Leupold products. They must sell them at the same price. You can get deals on free shipping etc. at various times. Cabelas allows me to use discounts and CC points on any product including Leupold optics.

If you find a "deal" online it is probably old discontinued product or counterfit. Leupold has had various names for their scopes. From oldest to newest.

Vari-X 1, 2, and 3
VX- I, II, and III
VX- 1,2, and 3

Also in 2012 Leupold upgraded the entire line of VX scopes with no name change. A VX-1 made prior to 2012 could be sold at a discounted price since it is a discontinued model.

The version listed on E-bay is about $35 less than it should be. It may well be brand new, but is likely a pre 2012 production scope and a step down in quality compared to current production. It could be counterfit, there are a lot out there. I wouldn't buy it unless I could see it 1st. It's well worth paying $199 for new production with upgraded features.

SWFA. They will at least price match other online retailers. Good deals can be found on their Sample List inventory as well.
I've had to return 1 item I've purchased from them and it was hassle free.

I don't know which ones sell leupold but I have been extremely happy with the following
B&h
Onthemark
Sport optics
Euro optics
Mile high
Swfa sample list

The scope I bought on sale from Cabela's last fall was one of the new VX3 custom dial models. It was certainly not pre-2012, and I doubt Cabela's is selling knockoffs.
