I want to get a decent military style before the next election (for obvious reasons). I'm having a really hard time deciding what to get. A nearby gun store has an AK-47 for $350, but one of the employees made a really good sales pitch for buying an Ar-15 platform.

I'd like to spend around $600, but am willing to go to $1000. I'm open to anything that's relatively light, can mount a red dot scope, and has a 20+ round magazine.

$350 for an AK from a gunstore is pretty cheap, these days, even if it's a humble WASR ( which it almost definately is). I'd go get that AK, then order a handful of mags from CDNN,aimsurplus, etc. and two cases of Golden Tiger from Copes. All that would run under $900.

I built an AR-15 for my pre-election rifle but I'm also going to buy a new AK simply because I love military style rifles and will be really frak'n angry if I can't buy them any more.

I just picked up a Stag Arms model 4 AR-15 on gunbroker for $805. The older son and I took it out this past Saturday. Love it! Functioned flawlessly. It's certainly the most accurate semi auto rifle I've ever fired. Highly recommended!

An AR is always nice because as long as the military and law enforcement utilize them, there "will always be parts". $660 bucks is a good start on a build, instead of a complete rifle. Then you would have one you like!:D

Incidentally, not to be a jerk, but maybe people should be focusing on how they are going to vote this fall, not just with the Prez, but also congress and local governments. I am sick and tired of hearing "what should I get before Obama gets in office" or the new sales pitch for suckers at the gunshows "get them before Obama takes them". This is defeatism and I will not buy from anyone who uses this to sell items or consider anyone rational that bathes in this mindset. ARGH!

Agree with B.C.Potemkin

We need to focus on congressional races etc. Either candidate will sign any gun-control measures that cross his desk. Neither one is a champion of fourth amendment rights. So don't make "guns" the litmus test - both fail.

We need folks in congress who will never let a bill like HR1022 see the light of day.

My Pre-Election purchase is half a rifle - I'm looking to buy or build an AR10 upper in 6.5x51 (.260Rem), in the hopes it shoots as good as a Swede Mauser.

:)

If you read around this forum, you'll see that most here have a pretty good handle on who to,and not to, vote for. But to not prepare for a coming storm, whether it materializes or not,is foolishness. None ( or few) of us WANT Obama as our next president, but stocking up on ammo or another rifle just in case is simply common sense, and not akin to hiding our heads in the sand.

Im not saying dont prepare, but I am saying dont be swayed by some dealer saying get it now. That means we have already lost and the dealer is trying to make a few bucks before they get "banned" which is good for business but terrible for the industry.

Ive been handloading as much M855 as I can and purchased another 20 mags, but thats because My AR is a very very hungry rifle and too darn fun to shoot! :D

For your budget, Tamren, an AK is good. Get a nice handpicked WASR (make sure it has none of the typical WASR issues), plenty of mags, and a couple of cases of ammo.

Then, add an Ultimak mount to the gas tube, and mount a reddot sight. I'd look at an Aimpoint if you can manage it. Holosights have issues with rapid fire while mounted on the gas tube...the heat affects them...

Right now I don't have either an AR or AK. What issues should I look for in an WASR rifle?

The employee was talking about the available options and what to look for, it wasn't a get-it-now-before-obama-gets-ya sales pitch. He had one in stock that the previous owner had put about $1700 worth of mods into and then ended up selling it.

Make sure the front sight isn't crooked left or right of centerline with the barrel. Also see if the owner will let you put an unloaded magazine in the gun to check and see if it wobbles too much. A little is OK, but too much can cause feeding issues.

Why not the AK @ $300 plus (1-2) AR15 lowers for ~$100/ea?

Once you have the receiver, you have the firearm.

This is a toughy for me too.

Next on my list was going to be a nice Ruger Redhawk. But those probably won't be banned for a while yet.

I'm not particularly excited about assault rifles, but I would sure like to have the option, and I'm not at all confident that we'll have that option for too much longer. Law-abiding gun owners are easy targets for slime-ball politicians.

I shot M16s in the Army, and had an SKS. It is my understanding that AK47s are at least as loose as SKSs, which are too loose to be very accurate.

ARs are easy to shoot well, and are more accurate. I think I'm going to have to get one.

I plan to buy an AK and an AR-15 before elections, provided my LTC comes in by then. I am 21 on October 1st and the license takes 4-6 weeks to get, so I am cutting it close.

I am a registered voter, but so are the gun grabbers. In the worst case scenario I will have some nice rifles and only have to deal with Obama's facist policies since he thinks we are all entitled to "the American dream." He wants to move the upper and lower classes into a middle class by redistributing wealth via taxes. What is this China?? That is communism my friend.

Best case scenario, McCain gets in and eliminates import bans and ammo gets cheaper! Yay!

I went with an M1A, but for $1000 or less, I would try to own either an AR-15 (since they are fairly ubiquitous and can be had with different uppers), an M1 carbine, or a FAL.

I was thinking the same as you, so I bought an AK. Now I'm in the process of putting together an AR for myself. I plan on purchasing a rifle kit from Del-Ton since I already have a stripped lower receiver. Total cost for a free-floated 16" AR will be around $700.

I'd advise you to put together the rifle as well from a stripped lower receiver. You'll end up saving a few hundred dollars and it's pretty easy to do.

My goal, KT CNC production-capacity willing and subject to funding, is to get both an RFB and a Robinson XCR 5.56x45 before December.

For you, if you're willing to go $1,000, I would also say get an AR15, and go post on www.ar15.com , to find out the best value in that particular price range. You'll get recommendations for dang near everything, and then you can make your choice. Don't build one; buy one - then you can use their C.S. if it doesn't work.

I'm picking up a Grendel AR and a G20 before the 2008 election is decided.

Why not a 308 some may ask?

1) much less recoil/slightly diminished ballistics
2) reduced ammo weight
3) excellent accuracy
4) nice mid-range application as DMR rifle

I could hardly believe my ears last week when I pitched this to the wife and she didn't resist the idea. WooHoo!

I already had 2 AR's, a Fal, a CETME and a SKS. My pre-election buys are a AK47 from Atlantic Firearms, and a AK74 from Ohio Rapid Fire.

The main reason for getting the AK's at this point had less to do with potential political problems than with availabilty of good parts to build from. The days of the really cheap AK are already gone, and it probably won't get any better.

If I were in the market for a WASR, I'd either go with Atlantic, who will do what it takes to make any issues right, or Henderson Defense, who offer a WASR that has been inspected for warts like canted sights and such.
