I have an AK, Mini 14, and RRA lower Stag upper AR 15. They have all shown to be reliable. I just don't need all three. I could really use to get rid of either the Mini or the AK and spend the money on ammo for the other two. I just can't decide which one to get rid of.

Mini 14: it is a newer model with the thicker barrel. It is decently accurate(2ish moa) and PC enough to take hunting so that is plus. It has decent ergos and it shoots the same round as the AR so that means I would only need to buy one caliber.

The AK 47: It is Bulgarian made that appears to be a post ban model (it has the barrel threads ground down). It has been 100% reliable and it is the type of gun that you would want when the world ends. However, I am meds dependent so I have no real fantasies of surviving too long at the end of the world;). It shoots a harder hitting round and adds a second caliber to my collection should I ever need to scrounge for ammo.

PS. These are not the only guns I have. They are just the only battle type rifles I own.

Dump the AK and feed the 223/5.56 rifles.
If you don't reload, I suggest that you learn, only then will you attain serenity. :what:

I agree with Smitty. Dump the AK because it is probably the least accurate of the bunch and then buy LOTS of .223/5.56.

Your Mini and RRA/Stag will make a nice pair. The reliability edge goes to the Mini (use factory mags) and the accuracy edge goes to the AR.

If you don't need just cash, how about trading the AK for a really nice Russian or Yugo (minus gr. launcher) SKS + cash?

Medicine? My wife relies each day on refridgerated insulin :scrutiny:, for her pump.
Huge numbers of family members will need much more than food/water/shelter after a disaster or man-made breakdown.

Ammo and guns would not help them, unless the Taliban (* Panthers) etc create large cells in the Memphis area (very unlikely).
An AK would not have any real advantage, unless somebody envisions being encircled by a group of low-lifes, where no other rifle (or shotgun) is available.

I am leaning toward getting rid the AK for all the above reasons.

JDgray,
I like them both the same. That is why this decision requires its own thread ;).

Col. Plink,
I can get more for the Mini 14. So that is a plus. But I would be able to consolidate ammo if I got rid of the AK so that might cancel out the cost.

I am somewhat of a hoarder by nature which is why I am thinking I am having a problem getting rid of the AK. I have not shot it in over a year. It seems like I am always buying ammo for others to shoot it but I never do. Shooting it bores me so I never do.

I'd not dump the AK. The AK will punch holes through cover where the .223 won't, it is ridiculously reliable and it'd take just short of it being run over by an Abrams to break it. I don't like .223, so I'd get rid of both of those and get a more significant caliber.

I wouldn't sell any. The amount of money you could get for one of them is not life-changing, and regret costs a lot.

Leon...Since it seems you're set on selling. The question is: Do you want to consolidate calibers or have multiples?
Of course if you are "bored" with the AK as you said....that pretty much closes it right there.

Nothing against AKs as AKs, but if I'm not using something I don't figure there's a lot of point in having it around. I tend to think "purpose" for any particular rifle, and I can't think of any particular use where the AK is superior to an AR or a Mini.

I'm on the side of keeping them all -- there's no compelling reason to get rid of an inexpensive AK unless you are anticipating the need for that .223 soon. OK, might be a good idea... I don't love AK's, but, I suppose that'd be the one to jetison. Use 62 gr. .223 in the AR.

Dump the one that you use least and the one that you don't think you'll not miss. Not necessarily the AK. I'm an AR-15 fan not an AK fan but I find AK's are cool weapons as well with cheap ammos. And something a lot of people prefer to bring in hostile environment because of its legendary reliability.

You say you want to buy more ammo? Sell something else to finance it. And as someone mentioned, you can buy twice as much x39 ammo as 223. So, I would sell the Mini....

Good luck
