New to the forum. It was suggested by one of the salty dogs (a fishing web site) that I give you guys a try for information. I have been shooting black powder since I built my own .54 Cal Thompson with a friend who goes by the name Chicken Hawk. Really enjoy black powder, especially the .54.

Anyway down to business. My Grandfather gave this weapon to me in the 70 and he has had it since the early 60's. It has German writing that is to pitted to read on the left side which is the smooth bore side. It is similar to Schmullen but it is not totally legibel. The top of the weapon has the number 4710 engraved. The rib between the two barrells is decorated with inlaid silver. The barrels G&WP 4710 on the smooth bore and G&WP 1854 on the rifled octagon barrel. The trigger guard, but cap, ram rod holder have intricate carvings of a simple design. The smooth bore measures just over 1/2" inside diameter and the rifled barrel is just under 3/4". The wood is a high quality. I do not believe it is a replica however I dont haveinformation as to the guns history. Thus I was asking for any ideas. I have emailed some internet sites. Not knowing your rules will not mention the names until I hear it is okay. And I will try to post some pictures. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Photos can be viewed at ifish.net under gallery laguna 29. As I have not figured out how to post a picture here. Will try and figure it out and post them. Thanks

German side by side combination guns have been around for a long time. You might do a search on german multi-barrel, or combo guns. (or just german guns) The three barrel versions are known as drillings, but the name for the two barrel rifle/shotgun excapes me at the moment.

This gun you have is a muzzleloader ? ( I suspect) , or a break open cartridge gun ? There were a number of makers in Germany for this type of firearm. I haven't seen many with octagon rifle and round shotgun barrels, but I am also not a collector of them.

It is a muzzle loader

The gun is a muzzle loader with a wooded ram rod.
Still trying to post some pictures but have not got it figured out on this web site.

I do have several posted on ifish.net. You go to the gallery to view photos and they are under laguna29. Thanks for your feed back. Also we have a thread going on this on the ifish hunting and fishing thread. One of the members suggested trying your web site.

Many were made in the USA by German smiths and others. They were very pouplar in NY,VT, NH.

If it is really German it would be called a Cape gun and was most likley made for Africa.

Hopefully, all the pics below are of the guni n question only, as there are some pics of a pistol also.If any of them belong to the pistol and not the one you want info on, let me know which ones are wrong and i'll delete them for you to avoid confusion. think I got it right, but I'm not sure on a couple closups of the sideplate, hammers, etc.Be aware that the mods may move this to the blackpowder section, or to Harley Nolden's Firearms Research section for better results. There wll be a link in this section to lead you to it though.Hope this helps.

Also to post pics, just click on the thumbnail of your pic on ifish to enlarge it, and copy a paste the info bleow it where it says UBBCODE: (it will have at both ends.

P.S.VERY cool looking gun!

Anyone have an idea if this butt cap should come off or not it has a slight notch at the back of the handle but With out forcing it I can't figure out how to slide it off. It sounds like there might be something in the handle.

Partial Name on side of gun

I just inspected the right side of the gun and found a partial name in the pitted metal. It reads: Schmull with the rest added Schmullullin but I am not positive on the rest as it is not entirely legible. Does this give anyone any other ideas. Also there are two dots above the m.
