Has anyone used the standard Tula small rifle primer with CFR for use in an AR? I remember a couple of years ago there was some talk about NOT using Tula standard primers in a free floating firing pin gun nor with ball powders. Is that still the same today?

Tula standard small rifle primers (copper colored) are a bad idea with ar15s or 5.56 pressures. They are also a no go with surplus ball powders and H335. Tule small rifle magnums hold the same caveats with the powder but are fine in ar15 rifles. But in newer ball powders like the Ramshot line they are fine. But if you want to shoot ball powders, there is nothing to lose by using the hotter 223 magnums.

I have done a bit more research (reading) I think I have the bases covered.

PLEASE tell me if I am wrong, here is a list of the primers I have, powders I intend to use. The majority of loads will be 223 fired in an AR type rifle with 55 grain pills.

Primers on hand CCI 400, CCI 450, Tula TUL223. On order are TUL556M and Winchester small rifle.

Powders on hand, CFE223, H335, 748, H3031, IMR4064, IMR4895

The Basic Reloading Manual that Powder Valley sends with CFE223 and the Winchester/Hodgen wevsite claim that the WSR primers should cover all the powders. Is this correct?

If Tula are the same as Wolf (I do not know and it is a ongoing discussion) There have been many variations of the Tula/Wolf brands so who knows??

I use regular Wolf SR in my AR. They are pretty hard primer, Never have used a military primer or a magnum.

I have used 1000's of Wolf SRP in my AR's

never an issue...

Let the debate begin:banghead: :p

I was priming some cases for a friend with russian primers as he diden't have the correct shell holder. One went of in the primer tool as I barely touched the primer handle. Scortched fingers, no perminent damage. No more russian primers for me.

The ebate over primers for the AR platform is that they want you to use hard primers to prevent slam fires.

I do not know enough about the subject but I have used Wolf SR and CCI SR with no issues.

Maybe slam fires are more common in full auto?? The "Military" AR primers have no been around for a long time. So what did people use before they advertized that you need these??

My manuals call for regular SR

Under 223 Rem. Hodgdon calls for Win SR. No distinction for semi autos

No one can predict if you're going to have slam fires in a certain rifle with a certain primer. Recommendations are made based on the fact that some people have had slam fires, even if they are in the minority. I have personally found that any AR using mil-spec springs will ignite primers that never slam fire, so i don't see the logic in recommending a primer that can.

Wolf and Tula aren't necessarily the same, but they are made in the same factory and are very close with their product lines.

The WSR should cover your primer needs. I shoot thousands on 233 reloads a year and only use 1-2 primers and powders. You have a huge assortment of components you want to use but most of that is probably of little benefit.
