Tumbling Media

I disagree, but you are entitled to your opinion :D

If you know a way of getting primer pockets and the inside of the cases that clean using corn media, I'd honestly appreciate if you could share it with us. When I want my cases really clean I use the ultrasonic first and the dry tumbler later, and get excellent results, but with the dry media only, the primer pockets and the inside of the cases will show carbon residue.

Well, I have many times- as many others have done as well, but sure, I'll spew it again !

Well, you do have to use mineral spirits In the media I suppose- so I guess you win.

I usually use about an ounce of 20% nufinish, 80% mineral spirits that I have premixed ready to roll in each pot of dirty brass.

Does that make it not dry tumbling ? Dunno.

One of the nice benefits to using nufinish on all of your brass all of the time is that most of the "crud" comes right off. Inside and out.

The little tiny bits that get left over in the pockets get uniformed out in the rest of the process.

I have an ultrasonic too.

If you really need em squeaky clean, super fast, and you don't mind the water and inevitable drying cycle- it works, too. Its also great on brass like that stuff in the box you have above for the first go round of removing the hard stuff.

Unless you are bordering on commercial levels of brass processing, or just really like high end kit- I really don't get the pin thing. I just don't. 95% clean is more than good enough for me. HEck, 60% is, but we need perfect surgical brass, every single firing, right ?
But hey- to each their own.

I'm not going to roll over and over as to why I think its unnecessary again.....this week...... but fear not, someone will be along shortly to type it out for us again.

All I can think of this late is "ShamWow":D

Surgical brass is just too funny!

Corn cob media with a little brasso mixed in shines my brass like new . Picked it up at cabelas

Brasso contains ammonia and will make your brass brittle. Use something like Nu Finish car wax instead. No amonia, and shines just as good. One capful added to your corn cob media will last 5-6 tumblings.

I appreciate your patience for typing it again, then ;). It's not about winning or losing, here. I was just curious. In my corn cob media, I use a good quality car polish that should be equivalent to your Nu Finish. The result is clean cases... on the outside. Inside, you can tell there's an improvement but far from what you get with the ultrasonic. Same for the primer pockets. I still have to find out what this "mineral spirits" thing is translated for in my language. I'm sure it's a product that is not difficult to purchase locally, but I'll have to look into it .

You're right in something, though. There's no need for that "surgical" cleanliness, I fully agree. I have put them in the tumbler for a couple of hours straight from the range floor, and no problem. It happens that sometimes I can afford to do it the way I really like, and then I take my time using first the ultrasonic and then the tumbler. That way I can have a nice stock of immaculate brass, that once loaded is the closest I'll get to brand new, factory ammo. And I just like that feeling.

It's not turpentine. That comes from trees. There's also no alcohol in mineral spirits.

Mineral spirits is the fraction of petroluem distillate which is a notch or two heavier than lighter fluid or naptha. It's commonly used to dilute and clean up oil based paints. Lighter fluid would work, if you have any laying around. Of course it evaporates faster. Heck, turpentine or denatured alcohol would probably work pretty well, too, for that matter.

Tumbling gets out any loose and flaky crud on the inside of the cases, but I have personally never seen corn cob polish off the "ugly" carbon layer on the inside of the cases. (This is good when it comes time to flare/expand!)

Right, took some Googleing but it's now clear. It's called "aguarrás mineral" in continental Spanish. "Aguarrás" is Spanish for turpentine, which is the one that comes from trees (pines, IIRC), and "aguarrás mineral" is the petroleum distillate. Thanks ;) .

AKA, good old Paint Thinner:) Many grades of it. Odorless is nice.

Just so nobody's misled. The ammonia evaporates somewhat quickly leaving the polishing compound behind making it a none issue.

+1 on Zoro tools. Ordered #40lb bag of corn cob media 20/40 grit yesterday and it was on my doorstep this afternoon. $22.91 and shipping is only $5. I was a new customer and when I registered online I got a $5 off first order of $25 or more coupon code in my email, so I added another item I needed and the coupon covered the shipping. Hard to beat that.

I'm kinda of brass clean freak. I use mixed media with nu finish but I let my brass run overnight. Usually 12 hors or so...I like it to be shiny ;)
