Haven't seen an ad for the '88 Turk Mauser recently, but a dealer in my area has 4 of 'em, which he's offering for $79. Considering that one of the 4 has matching numbers on receiver, stock, magazine bottom piece and bolt, and considering that I do not have a C&R lic, which means that ordering one would entail paying a FFL holder to recieve it, plus the shipping, can someone advise me is this a decent price?

The guns are full of cosmoline, so the only thing I can say about the bore is that there is one. The 2 locking screws on the trigger guard are there if that makes a difference.

Gee that cosmo smells nice, just as does Hoppe's #9.

I will assume you mean a Model 98.

Several years ago I bought one of the $49 Turks from Big 5 Sporting Goods. Lots of cosmoline and the bore basically unviewable.

After getting this thing home and cleaning it up, I found the bore to be badly pitted, the cleaning rod lug in the stock was stripped, the rear barrel band screws pretty useless, and the stock in horrid condition.

All in all, it was a $49 beater. I have seens a few decent Turks that had been refinished, but they're up around $150-$175.

My opinion after purchasing many Mauser rifles is that you pretty much get what you pay for, unless someone (Like those that rip people off on Yugos for $279) sees you coming and charges you twice what the rifle is worth. Then again, sometimes you can find great deals in the local gun shops.

If you spend $79 on a Mauser, you'll most likely get a $79 Mauser. Hope this helps.

I've been lucky enough to get a whole lot of mauser for $150 or $200. But I've never been lucky enough to get much more than a $75 Mauser for $75. There's kind of a cutoff line. If they're selling Turks in particular below a hundred, chances are it's gonna be a parts gun and a beater. NOt that that's such a bad thing. A good Ankara is a very sturdy rifle and makes an excellent truck gun. But Persian Mausers they ain't.

I bought my Turk for $49 back a few years ago. Needed the stock repaired, I did a quick sloppy job even tho' I knew better, and now it needs fixed again. But the bore is perfect, and it consistantly shoots 2 inches at 100yrds with surplus ammo. It looks great now and I wouldn't trade it. That being said, the last few shipments of Turks I've taken a look at have been pretty rough. You can tell they are at the bottom of the cellar. The last shipment, and it may be THE LAST, apparently showed up with no furnature at all.

A friend asked me to pick out a good Turk at a gun show he could not attend. I tried to get a good one, but couldn't clean the bore or get through the cosmoline, dirt, old grease, etc. The tab was $59 plus tax

He cleaned it up and found the bore nearly perfect; with S&B ammo, the darned thing shot close to 2" at 100 yards. Talk about luck of the draw!

The three turks I've been around (including the one I own) tend to shoot a whole lot better than they look.
