Good Morning Gents,

I have been gone from the group for a long time. Back in search of help as I have been given what at this point is starting to feel like an impossible task! I am looking for a 20ga., 28ga. or .410 semiautomatic. In a youth length with an optics rail. Taking any info I can get.

Thanks
Don

I typed in your requirements in Google and came up with a lot of choices in 410, 28, 20 gauge shotguns! Optic rails can be added be a gunsmith !

My favorite for kids isn't made any more but a Remington v3 was the cats meow. Softer 12

My nephews 5 year old shots his daddy’s Remington 1187 20ga compact model . He put a cantilever mount on it , no gunsmith required , just knock out the pins to install it . He shoots it from a tripod . This was from was Saturday . IMG_3260.jpeg

I made the move to a 20 several years ago. With the better shells and an aftermarket choke tube it effective gun to 40 yards with mid priced shells. If you want to go to some of the really expensive TSS loads probably 50 yards. You can't just pick up anything at Walmart and get good patterns.

As you go to smaller and smaller gauges there is more need to use the expensive ammo. For me 20 is a good balance and recoil is very tolerable.

I did it mostly for a lighter more compact gun to carry around more than recoil reduction. Almost by accident I found a good deal on a used Weatherby SA-08. This is a sub-6 lb shotgun so it has more recoil than most 20's.

I'm not aware of any semi drilled for mounting optics. Lots of pumps are.

If you can live without an optics mount and if price isn't an object I'd look hard at a Benelli M2 with a 24" barrel. That is what I was looking for when I found the Weatherby. I had trouble locating a Benelli and price would have been $1300. I ran across the Weatherby used for $350 and decided to give it a try. It's made in Turkey with Weatherby badges, but it's a decent gun.

I bought a Stevens 320 for my wife because it had 3" capacity. She hated it. I dug out my old 20 ga 1100 and some 1 1/8 oz loads of copper plated #5 shot and, no problem. Like me, blue steel, walnut, and low recoil equals a happy hunter.
Going on 58 years and two sons, nine grandkids, 45 acres of deer and turkey heaven....I am truly blessed.

My grandson is using a 12 gauge 11-87 with a saddle scope mount this year. 20's can kick more than a 12 depending on weight and load.
