In the next few days I'll be going up to the property to test a few turkey loads. L-R #4,5 & 6 Federal flite control 2oz, Hornaday versatight #6 1.5oz , Winchester supreme #4 idk how much shot, Remington nitro #4 1 7/8oz and for comparison federal #4 1 1/8oz. Also I want to see how the 20 gauge Remington #4 does out of my mother in law's bolt action mossberg.
The 12 gauge stuff will all be out of a 28" fixed modified choke barrel. I'm not sure what the length of the mossberg 20 barrel is, but it's a fixed full choke.
Anyone care to offer any predictions as to which will give the best pattern at 25 & 40 yards? I'm new to all of this, so any advice will be appreciated. And as i've said, I will be going out and shooting some targets so I will have personalized experience with my specific firearms. I'm just looking for some more experienced observations on my options.

I've heard some people say that full choke or even extra full is a prerequisite for turkey. The 20 is nice in that it has front and rear sights, but it slings a lot less shot.

I've also heard that these specialized turkey loadings are all marketing hype. Once again, I don't have any pre-concieved notions, rather I've just picked up a box here or there over the last few months as I've seen them. What is the consensus on the versatight/flitecontrol premium wads? Are they worth it? Do you suspect they will let my modified choke 12 perform well enough out to 40 yards?

generally the smaller shot is always going to pattern better simply cause its more shot per oz so my guess is the 6 will look better and may still have a good enough pattern at 40 yards with your modified choke just have to shoot it to find out.

The sixes might pattern a little better, but in all the testing I've done shooting into different boards, the fours hit a LOT harder.

I have had excellent results with the Winchester XX 12 ga 3" 2oz of #4.

27 one shot kills in a row. Inside 40 yards it's deadly.
