We've had our trailer down at Port O'Connor, Texas this hunting season. Plenty of trailer space around town, is a fishing/recreation town primarily. So, we're kicked back in the trailer one afternoon before heading to my deer stand and see 6 hens strut by the trailer about 40 yards away. I thought (COOL, didn't know turkeys were in this part of the county) and went on about my business. Well, heading down there yesterday, we passed 3 hens across the fence on the Lasalle ranch not more than 5 miles from my place! Hmm. Now, I'm thinkin' they might be moving my way or might already be there and I just haven't seen one, yet.

This morning, I was getting in a little morning dove hunt as the sun rose, got there right at sun up. I hear turkey gobbles. I heard 'em a bunch. But, then I hear the low honk of domestic geese coming from the same direction, so I think THOSE turkeys are someone's livestock. Even though I've got the place up for sale, it'd be nice to see turkeys move in. This morning, first time in a long time, I broke a covey of quail. I knew they were back 'cause i could hear 'em every morning when they broke roost. I had thought all the danged hogs might have wiped 'em out, but guess not. Quite a few of 'em around, now. Wish I had a good bird dog. But, while there are more hogs than ever down there, seems like other game is finding a way to exist with them.

And, I had sandhills on my game camera under my feeder the other day. Can't bait 'em, of course. I can't hunt these down there anyway, though, but trust me, the meat is awesome on these things. I've shot 'em up around Eagle Lake before. We have a lot of 'em, but it's illegal in that area to shoot 'em. I think it's because they worry someone might mistake a whooper for one. Well, you'd have to be blind, but in a thick fog, perhaps. I've never seen a whooper on my place, but have seen 'em across the bay on Matagorda Island near Panther Point.

A serious question, but are all of your turkeys down there so small? The ones up here are all at least double the size! (This is probably because they aren't hunted at all here...)

Those aren't turkeys, they're sandhill cranes. We have a lot of species diversity along the coast. :D

BTW, sandhills are big birds for migratory waterfowl. They got drumsticks on 'em, but I am not sure how to cook 'em and be able to get a bite off. Mine have turned out tough as nails. The breast, though, is WONDERFUL, very mild, very large. :D

Heckuva lot better'n condor, I'd reckon. :D

They sure waste a lot of money keeping these things around, but then, it supports a tourist industry around Rockport/Aransas Pass, boats going out to see the whoopers. Not sure if the income exceeds the outflow, but whatever. It's tax dollars and all we have to do is print more money or borrow from the Chinese, I guess. If there weren't no whoopers, I could shoot sandhills, though. They fly over real low most mornings. :D

We are covered in the Sand Hill cranes here in FL. They are brave suckers and don't flinch off of the sidewalk until me and my ridgeback are about 15-20 feet away, then they really start cussing at us!

I can't eat them here either.

I have been trying to get them through the winter. They like the feeder when it snows.
