Seen one at a pawn shop for 140 bucks and I'm putting it on layaway. It's an okay looking rifle, bore is sharp but a little dark and it looks well used. Can I get some maintenance info such as bolt removal?

Try surplusrifle.com, they have picture tutorials for disassembling most common military surplus rifles.

Bolt removal is simple -- the bolt release is at the left rear of the receiver. Cock the rifle, put the safety in the mid position (safety lever straight up.) Open the bolt, pull out on the release, and the bolt should come right out. The cocked bolt can now be disassembled. Look at the bolt sleeve (the back part to which the safety is attached) and you will see the sleeve lock plunger. Press this back and unscrew the firing pin and sleeve assembly. This is really as far as you need to go -- you can clean the firing pin and spring, and use a cleaning rod and rags to clean the bolt interior.

Don't uncock the bolt out of the rifle.

    Amen.

And you need something with a hole in it to allow you to compress the firing pin spring if you intend to disassemble the sleeve and striker assembly. Don't try it without the proper tool.

Thanks guys, just wanting to know how to take it out and just the minor disassembly for maintenance. I'm pretty good at taking my mosin completly apart as well as my K31. I'll wait until I learn a little more about this rifle before even attempting to strip it completely.

For detailed information on the Mauser, I recommend The Mauser M91 Through M98 Bolt Actions, A Shop Manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen. That has detailed information on stripping, cleaning, repairing, modifying and so on.

Also, instead of gambling on the gun working, make sure that they guarantee it will work. One pawn shop I went to said they'd repair it if it didn't fire, and another said they'd let me exchange it for a gun of equal value. I've never purchased from a place that said "may or may not work, it's your loss if it won't fire".

When I pick this rifle up, I think I'm going to refinish it in the same color as my Mosin and my K31. Whaddya think?
