Ok if we all "did" and had to agree on one for all north american big game[thinking of everyone] same price-availibilty and a realistic 30 grain swing in bullet weight(single twist rate availible) NOT YOUR FAVORITE best for all. Its a tuffy but honestly??? 270win. I just cant see how to beat it but im probably wrong. 6.5 06?

300 WIN MAG
You can load down to less omph than a 30/30 and up to full power with an amazing variety of bullet weights and styles.
If you mean factory loads only I'll take the 30/06 thank you.
Nothing against the .270 I have one that I really like just prefer the 06.

I'm having trouble picking. It would have to be either the 264 Hawk, 276 B-J Express, 300 Hoffman, or the old standby 8x48mm Rimmed Sauer.

I am so glad I don't live in that world.

6.8 SPC, because my long action cases don't load well in my AR15, but an AR cartridge still makes a handy bolt rifle with plenty of power. :D

WELL this one-- and think of those poor guys down in the south. 30 cal would blow up a whitetail {well way overkill} as in the north. If anyone thinks their skills arn't up to the task of dropping anything alive in the U S with a -say 260 rem. WELL i bet you could.

The small animal end of the scale is easy...a round like the .375 will kill any on this continent. The upper end is more difficult as the big brown bears and moose take a lot of killing. If it were for a couple of the largest head of game I would choose the 6.5 Creedmore.

But seeing this is for all North American game I will stick with a round I already shoot, the 375/338 wildcat. It has the power of the 375 H&H, very low recoil in my Browning BAR, and can be loaded up or down...tho in the lightest loads you may have to hand cycle the action.

Yes this is about a dozen times on this site since I joined but I always play along. Mainly cuz it's a boring Monday at work. First off, you know the .30-06 is gonna win. Always does and for the most part I agree. 110-220 gr bullet choice. No I don't agree it's too much gun for small southern whitetail. That's what they make 110 gr bullets and reduced loads for. I own and compete with many .30-06's. 1903, 1917, Garand, etc. Hell my Vintage sniper rifle for Perry is an 1903A4 and shoots 175gr bullets very well out at 600 yds. My personal favorite is the old dependable 6.5x55 Swede. In Europe it is still the #1 Moose (read American Elk) caliber. Kills em dead and still one of my 90 year old WW2 sniper vet buddy's favorite prairie doggin calibers. So can I pick one? Yes..the old 06 followed closely by the 6.5x55. Can't tell I'm old school can ya?

.30cal guys chimin in heavy allriteythen. OK if a 25 06 CAN drop a moose-elk and does, why a 30 cal. NOT because you have one vote!! Would i feel like i can't get it done with a 257 roberts NOPE. Moving north to south in a year ONE gun and not stopping a charging grizzzly _-_-flat shooting & alittle overkill im back to 260 cal. area

.338 Winchester magnum, or .338-06. Bullets are generally of heavy construction, you wont blow big holes in light game, and it will do for just about anything id think. Its also right at the recoil level im comfortable with. You can also chamber the .338-06 or .338wm in your choice of actions, bolt, single shot, semi (BAR, 7400), lever (BLR), or slide (BPR if you can find one, or 7400).

Whats next cheytac 408.Imagine if you lived down south .243's knockem over. Back to the ?? If we all had to agree on one round to get it done???

:what::banghead::barf: Its for fun and an exercise in common sense

yes YES YYEESS 6.5 06?? i would give up my 270 for that for a small gain.

(if i had to)

I thought this was just another "what if" caliber thread. Now I am confused. The .30-06 is wrong and doesn't answer your question? Only the .270 or 6.5 06 makes sense? :scrutiny:
