Yup 30-06 ! Maybe with a one in 9" twist so I could shoot subsonic 250 grain bullets to get the other rifles back.

There are better specialized rounds, but the ole 30-06 is a pretty good bet for anything in North America. Some of that is because its a good design, but in large part it is because of its longevity, and popularity. It has been played with a lot, and has a ton of good loads, and information available for it. With an unlimited budget I would have a wide variety of rounds, but to meet the OPs conditions its the 30-06 all the way.

.308!!! If it will punch throough a telephone pole it will kill anything that breathes air

6.5x55 here is why.
For varmint and light game the 85gr class bullets can be pushed to 243 varmint speeds/trajectory.
For deer/pronghorn the 120gr bullets at 3000+fps shoots as flat and hits just as hard at range as the 130gr 270 Win.
140gr bullets at 2800fps drive as deeper then a 180gr 06 at identical speeds, makes for a great round for all but the largest North American game. The 140gr Partition is a well proven elk bullet.
For really big stuff the 160gr class 6.5 pills are well known to penatrate deep enough for any game on earth, yes even thophy bull elephant. These are commonly used for large boar, bear, and moose in Europe.
Combine all of these traits with an easy to handload, HIGHLY accurate, low noise cartrage that is so easy on the shoulder that your young children can shoot it and you have the best all around cartrage to ever exist. OK the 06 cult can start flaming me now

depends on what you're talking about... post apocalypse grocery getter? I'll go with a .22 magnum it'll kill deer at a respectable distance, kill a bear better than a stick would, won't explode squirrel all over the place, and lastly isn't so loud as to bring every zombie in the valley down on you :p

Now if we're talking red-dawn here, I'd have to say .30-06 to add in the extra range and power for going through whatever happens to need going through.

If the concensus is 30-06 I'd be ok with that. I can make it work. But I'd like to make a campain for the 35 whelen, it'll do better on the big stuff better with cast bullets and if you reload you can use 357 pistol bullets on the cheap.

I will put my 6.5 Sweed aginst the 30-06 ANYDAY for versitility, I would know, I load and shoot both of them. :D I have always loved the 06, but if I were to only have one rifle there is no doubt in my mind which one fits more real world hunting situations.
I suppose it depends on what you consider the ideal recoil range, the most versitle calibers ever to exist are: 7x57, 6.5x55, 280Rem, 30-06, and 7mm Rem mag.

one round for everyone? Only request: available in short action please.

Request Denied!

In our post apocalyptic 1-cartridge reality, we can't allow ourselves to be constrained by the limitations of a short action.... I'm afraid you'll just have to move your hand the extra .5 inch....you know what they say about post apocalyptic life.... its tough...

I vote for either the 30-06, 300 Win, or 300 WSM :)cool:) ... we'll just have to get creative with our small game hunting techniques.... e.g. bank shots, blowing the limb out from under squirrels, etc.

If they had the power to make us turn in all of them but one, they would take them all, so there is no reason to choose one.

Get out and vote, support the NRA, etc, etc, and quit worrying about silly "pick the one you get to keep" threads.

Seriously. :)

*sigh* OK, .22 LR.
