Being retired, I spend some time watching the "Outdoor" channels.
Things I have observed:
1.8-10 "Sponsors" of a segment---result, more commercial time than actual hunting.
2.Wives/girlfriends of hunters with more concern over how they dress and look than the actual hunt.
3.Hunters "whispering" to the cameraman or hunting companion after the shot is made!!
4.Video's of kill are not the same animal as shown in the shooting sequence.

It's kinda like the cowboy in the old westerns that manages to shoot 10 or so shots from a sixgun without reloading!!:what:

I've noticed the same things.
Sometimes when I'm hunting and haven't seen anything for hours, I wonder if I look above me in the tree and whisper to the imaginary camera-man, if a big buck might walk over my way. And always whisper after the shot, you wouldn't want to wake up a dead deer. What gets me is how they can whisper at each other with a deer in bow range and not spook it.

There hasn't been a good one on the air since Curt Gowdy's "American Sportsman" or Jim Thomas's "Lone Star Sportsman" Oops I just pegged the "Geezer" meter.

I like the camera angle looking down the muzzle right before the game is taken. Yeah cause the deer aren't scared by the camera man! dur... I explained to my wife that that is just a camera trick and the shoot all those shots after the animal is dead... she looked at me like I was telling her santa clause wasn't real!

They don't even really hunt on those shows. They shoot pets on "hunting ranches." The only reason they wear camo and sit in tree stands is to keep the deer from noticing them and running up to them begging for buckets of grain like your dog would do for a doggy treat. It's pathetic, absolute garbage.

you can't say that about all shows..Tred Barta doesn't hunt that way. Some do though.. I think bucks of tecomate is by far the worst about it.

And because Scent Lock or somebody is paying them big bucks to wear it. It's not realistic at all I know, but I still watch. There's just something about seeing the big bucks, even if they've been handfed.

What grates on me is:

1. It takes the hunter about 45 minutes to take the safety off and shoot. That doesn't apply to Craig Boddington though; he gets right to work and caps the animal in short order.

2. Rock music. If they need rock music to delude you into thinking something cool is happening, it's not much of a show.

3. "Stars" that don't know how to speak good English. At about the first "I seen" I usually switch to another channel. In case you don't know, it should be "I saw" and not "I seen."

4. Persons who aren't aware that the word is "species" and not "shpeshies."

5. "Stars" who are trying to sell crap like that little rubber thingy on the barrel that's supposed to make the gun shoot better. Then there are the Trijicon hawkers. There are also Thompson/Center hawkers but I don't care about them since since I like Encores.

6. Narrators/"stars" who don't know about basic biology. For instance, I've heard common springbok, black springbok, golden springbok and white springbok referred to as "subspecies." They're not subspecies any more than a Holstein cow is a subspecies of a Black Angus.

7. I hate the narrator on Tracks Across Africa that does the introduction. It's kind of like they think if one talks in a deep voice you should believe them. Fortunately, I've learned to fast forward through that part so I don't have to endure him.

I'm done now...

I wish the faked multi-camera angle shots would go away.

I wish the "there he is!" tracking shot, when the camera is already behind the deer would go away.

I wish the whispering in the treestands would go away.

I wish they'd show more real stuff, like the effort to get two treestands up in a tree, get situated AND see deer in the same day...

Some of the shows are realistic. I truly can't stand the Texas-based ranch shows. Being (kind of) in the outdoor biz through magazine writing, and knowing some of these guys, I also know that some of the Texas hunts that are portrayed by Bill Jordan (more power to him) and his crew are truly untouchable to you and me. You think 8-9000 dollar hunts? Think higher for the big trophies, like AFRICA prices.

I try not to be bitter, but I don't like the portrayal of hunters that come from a lot of hunting shows. That's not a "sendero", friends. That's the ROAD that the feed truck just drove down.

Ugh.

(before I get thrashed, I enjoy a lot of the RealTree shows, and the personalities).

This thread made me remember a show I used to watch with my dad when I was little. All I remember about it was Jim Varney would be on it from time to time. I used to love it. Haven't watched any new hunting shows though.

I'll always think of marlin perkins and his trusty sidekick jim when I think of wildlife shows. Old jim was crazy when he was young. That was real danger there. no special effects and no fakery.

Seems like the show always wrapped up with marlin saying something like "I don't think jim will be trying that again anytime soon".

it's all about sponsorship and money. the loud rock music is also a turnoff along with the whispering. these are usually pretty much "canned hunts" anyway. for some reason they also seem to use the Contender rifles and high dollar optics like Swaroski, most average hunters cant afford optics like that. also ticks me off they hardly ever mention what caliber they are shooting. I'm 57 and remember Jim Thomas well, was it Lone Star beer that sponsored the show? I guess the "guns and alcohol dont mix" thing nixes that.

"something better that this 8 pointer" isnt scheduled to come to the feeder for another 10 minutes for his scheduled feeding. aint no telling how much it costs for these guys to hunt on these "managed" ranches (dont even get me started on high fence ranches in Texas). a friend of mine owns one of these where you can hunt exotics andd I have seen the price list..aint cheap....also these guys go from state to state hunting, how many bucks do these guys kill every year.?

How about, "I'm waiting for something better than this 8 pointer, cause I know there is one in the area".

they record those kind of statements after they shot the animal they are about to show you. when we watch these shows we assume they are showing you the footage in proper order. but they take the footage and add all kinds of random shots with random animals.. you don't even know if the animal they show you was standing in front of them when they made their comments.. most likely it wasn't

I know Larry Csonkas show is no fake. Returning from filming a caribou hunt in the Aleutians the motor in the boat quit and they spent 10 hours in very rough seas[that is the same part of the ocean deadliest catch is filmed] till rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter.

I agree! It seems to fake and in NE its not even close to hunting in the monster buck states. Here you got to walk to find them during the day and bow hunting is not so easy.

I always wonder if the deer is shot during the daylight when the obligatory 'holding head' picture is taken it more often than not is pitch dark. I have to be real bored to watch any of these.

Mutual of Omaha's Kingdom was my all time Favorite! Marlin & Jim Fowler were men that showed no fear. I couldn't wait til Sunday evenings just to watch it... The helicopters, drop nets, bushmen that carried spears... dart guns. That show was enough to make me want to be a zoologist/ wildlife biologist. (BTW did get a BS in that)- here's a preview just to bring back a reminder
