Here are a couple inexpensive items that would have to be considered daunting  non-gun weapons to face. Both are relatively small and come in belt pouches so a hunter or camper could have either readily available.

Hi HSO....

Yep, it locks.

The one in the pic is a pretty cheap one - like about $10-$15 if I remember correctly. Same money or a little more will get a sturdier (albeit heavier) one with more positive locking anywhere tree trimming tools are sold. Closed length on the one shown is about 8.5", which is more or less "handy". The grim part of this saw is those teeth which are designed to cut tree limbs - anyone whose arm or leg gets raked even once is going to be in a very pressing need of an Emergency Room and a few pints of blood. Such a saw can also disembowel someone in a hurry and the opening will be as jagged as the Oregon coast. I believe Fiskars makes a pretty good one for perhaps $20.
Of course the drywall saw shown is a "fixed blade" item with lesser-but-still-formidable teeth.

do you mean non-gun, non-knife weapons? cuz id rather have a machete than a folding ax...

I have one of those Fiskars/Gerber folding saws. They do inflict cuts fast- I have the scars on my thumb to prove it!

Whether they would do any deep damage, though, I'm not convinced on.

Actually, the only "deep damage" I really care to do to anyone is to their attitude. The saw teeth (hopefully) would serve most often as a deterrent to amplification of hostilities. Nobody who leaves me and mine alone has a single thing to fear.

Folding saw as a weapon? Wouldn't a hammer or kitchen knife, even a shovel, which most people have, be more effective? If you're going to spend a few quid (ahem, dollars) then you can get a machete for close to nothing...

Intimidation value for any weapon is useless. Might as well carry a dog doodie on a stick, and threaten to touch the bad guy with it, if indimidation is your only concern.

Well, whenever I've cut myself with a really sharp knife, there's very little initial pain, and unless there's major damage, like a severed muscle or organ damage, I'd bet that someone who was cut with one would still have one more swing in him.

Whenever I've cut myself with a saw, there's been an immediate "$&^%" on my lips, an instantaneous recognition that I've probably done screwed up bad. And lots and lots of pain.

sm,

You are a card. I haven't heard anyone mention a newspaper or magazine in years.

Jab to the windpipe, gag, thud...

...and don't forget a rolled up airline safety brochure. :D

One thing I commonly carry when going through checkpoints is a German 3-in-1 pen, called a Rotring. Not only is it functional, but it makes a very good stabbing weapon. I've got a couple of 'em, for those times I must appear benign.

In the past they haven't garnered a second look. I just toss them in the bin with my keys. Of course I haven't flown since about 2003, so maybe they'd be spotted now. A couple months ago I made it into court no problem. Though I did know the officer with the wand, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Anyway, it really is amazing what can be used as a weapon.

[EDIT] Whoo-hoo, pens are still on the kosher list: http://www.seatguru.com/articles/tsa_prohibited_items.php

My pen-fu is strong and I need not feel nekkid while flying.

Household items as weapons.

I picked up the Husky trimmer (Home Depot) for jobs around the "estate" and often view it as a major protective device just lying around the garage.
I do need a sheath for mine.

I would rather my 800,000 volt Stun Pen first.

Expensive metal pens are nice, but try stabbing a steak with a regular old bic.. you'd be impressed.

You wanna talk inexpensive, get yourself a break-blade craft knife (too late at night to think of the proper name..)

Sold here for 59 cents a pop:

I've seen 'em at dollar stores too, they have a common lawful purpose, they're not too expensive to toss, and they are utterly, terrifyingly sharp. Trust me and my fat fingers on that.

They're clumsy to deploy fast or one-handed, which makes them less than ideal for SD, but I would really hate to face off against a guy wielding one.

Are you serious?

Agreed Pax,

Any pen will do. But I must admit, I am a snob when it comes to pens...and a notorious thief!

Risasi,

on behalf of nurses across the world.. I hate you. :D

I'd just be bummed if I had to use it, and then the cops took it as evidence. I'll go to the trouble of getting a gun back.. but a pen? Just doesn't strike me as worth the effort.

Go buy a 20-pack for $2, then the bg (and consequently the cops) are free to keep it :)

They would make a good defense tool if you were trying to slash a person, but if you have ever tried prodding or stabbing anything hard they cheap blade lock that consists of a thin piece of plastic that locks into a notch, they retract really easy. I still wouldn't want to get in a fight with a person wielding one of those, but there are better choices.

Read most of the non-gun defensive devices people have proposed. So I'm gonna add mine:
****** nozzle and hose from a "hot water bottle" :neener:
For some that have been swatted with this, it do have an intimidation factor....
But I think a folding saw would inflict considerable damage. Possible it wouldn't be a clean/straight cut.
I'm no expert and I did not sleep at a motel last nite....

Any of them will do. The key is to not let your adversary know you have it until it's too late. If the only weapon I have available is a sharp stabbing weapon like a pen or knife generally the best thing to do is let them close. Pull it out last second.
Human reaction time is generally .2 seconds, to do anything about what you just realized, best case .2 seconds. That's 4/10ths of a second or more for one to react and counter an attack. I am not adding anticipation of an attack into this equation.
Anyway, my point is if you have used a little guile you may be able to help your situation by reacting first. If the goblin is clearly going to do you harm and you go on the offense it can mean all the difference in the world.

Look to target the temple, throat, eyes, groin, underside of the arm pit, kidney.
If you have a slashing weapon; throat, eyes, wrists or inside of the forearm. (this is why I block with the OUTSIDE of my forearms.)

Those are my immediate targets, and I prefer to stab. Don't stop with one shot either, you need to hit him multiple times, multiple locations. Pound him with a flurry of activity. If you must use force, pretty much every attack had better be a lethal one.

As for the two pics Shawnee posted, I'd take the one on the left. I prefer fixed blades. Also I would rather have something smaller, and sharper. If you're a slasher you need a sharp blade. When blood vessels are torn they have a tendency to constrict.

You may not belive this, so just check the TSA site. You can carry knitting needles. My wife knits, so she carries 4 that are over a foot long, and have the flat butt tip, Pretty serious defensive weapon, and never a second glance. Actually listed as allowed. Love it.
