Two Cheap Non-Gun weapons

My only question with these saws is what area are they really helpful in? They aren't much more totable than a small hatchet or fixed blade knife, both of which are more effective weapons. And not nearly small enough to fit the same nitche as a pen or a pocket knife. I don't know I guess I just don't know what reason you would have to be using one of these for defense...

so a hunter or camper could have either readily available.

Yea, you couldn't have one on the street, but you could have one in your garage, in the back of your truck, in your shed, your yard..

I agree that mindset is everything, but it's always good to have some knowledge of the meanest weapon in your immediate vicinity.

ETA: If ever you're cutting small branches, for a shooting lane or something, you will find that there is a window of fibrous stem thickness (henceforth known as the WoFST) too thick for a knife, too thin for a hatchet. I guess you could pack a machete, but a saw or a set of pruning shears would do better.

Hi PH...

Both the saws I pictured have cordura carring belt-cases, both will fit in the pocket of a game jacket or a hip pocket, both weigh easily less than a pound, and both could be useful in separating the pelvis when cleaning a deer.

I see your point. I suppose I am naturally disposed to use the hatchet and large knife or machete, because I happen to carry a machete (bolo actually same diff) and a hatchet pretty much everywhere I go when I am out in the woods...

If you use a folding weapon, best to just slash to make long gashes across the body, stabbing would probably fold the weapon on your hand.

You may not belive this, so just check the TSA site. You can carry knitting needles. My wife knits, so she carries 4 that are over a foot long, and have the flat butt tip, Pretty serious defensive weapon, and never a second glance. Actually listed as allowed. Love it.

I love it, too! They'll take away a little tiny pen knife, but let you keep a foot long needle. Or a pair of scissors (as long as the scissors blades are no more than four inches in length. After all, scissors with longer blades were designed for the sole purpose of hijacking flights and should be kept out of the hands of civilians). Where's the logic in that? It's amazing that people actually take such arbitrary rules seriously...

Agreed. I never go anywhere without mine.

I have a 4 D cell Mag light. I pulled out the spare bulb holder in the bottom cap and replaced it with some quarter size lead washers.

The thing hits like a dead blow hammer.

I've seen folding hatchets before. The handles were of folded steel and hinged to fit aroung the square thin blade like a picture frame when folded for carry in a pocket.
Not much for felling trees but would sever a wrist or cut halway through a forearm and radial bone pretty easily, not to mention spliting a skull.
Hatchets, like tomahawks, are difficult to block.

I have a low cost folding saw thats given many years of good service, its my go to saw for trimmin fore ends and similar jobs as well as brush.
The locking blade is heavy enough that I can swing it open like a gravity knife.
One of these saws would rip through a throat easier than slashing with a knife blade. The victim could fall back or spin away from the stroke as easily.

I've seen larger folding saws near three feet long when open, they are locked open by a wingnut.

My brother witnessed a road rage fight in which one guy went after another with a chainsaw he had in the back of his truck. The chainsaw motor stalled out and the other guy thought he was safe to attack. The guy with the chainsaw just swung the non turning blade and one tooth caught his opponent in the chest and opened him up like a zipper.
Last he saw they were running down the street one guy holding his chest and his pursuer swinging wildly with the chainsaw.

There are only two types of weapons, edged and impact. If you can pick it up and swing it at someone and it does not have an edge it is an impact weapon. Even a bullet is a hybrid going really, really fast.
